For as long as I live, I'll never get over the fact that we've walked on the moon, harnessed the sun's power, and made it possible to send messages around the planet in mere seconds... ...yet we're still so stupidly primitive we think where you were born should determine what rights you have.

Special birthday edition of Tupo today!* *There is actually nothing special about it. But it IS really my birthday, and Monday is a great day to start, so I'd love it if you played, or just shared it with somebody who might like it. :) playtupo.com

Interesting #tupo stat of the day: Sunday actually has a *higher* perfect solve rate and faster times than Fri/Sat. The absolute number of perfect solves is about the same, though, which suggests this is probably because mostly advanced solvers are showing up today, and beginners are sitting out.

Oh wow this new software looks really cool... [Clicks through to obviously vibe-coded website] ...and it will probably be abandoned in a month so I will literally never use it for anything.

Either this Friday's #tupo is way less brutal than last week's, or players are getting much better. (Or both!) Solve times are up from yesterday (which is to be expected), but the pctg. of players with a perfect game didn't drop by nearly as much as last week. Last Friday: 10.9% Today: 29.2%

For those curious, here are all the week's perfect game percentages Monday: 54.1% Tuesday: 57.7% Wednesday: 34.6% Thursday: 43.4% Friday: 29.2% Wednesday's dip is interesting. It suggests to me that players had a hard time jumping from Easy to Medium, but learned from it and came ready for Thurs.

Solve times are much higher than yesterday, of course, but significantly lower than they were last week. To be in the top 5% of all solvers last week, you needed a <6:45 time; top 5% of perfect solves needed to be <5:53. This week, both are dramatically lower, at <4:19 and <3:44, respectively.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

I built a fun little Chrome extension that lets plants invade your abandoned tabs the longer you leave them unread. To access them again, you have to slash through the vines 🪚🌿

The Mass Effect series represents a lot of my most impactful gaming memories, and many of my favorite characters. That story came to life like nothing I ever experienced. I spent literally hundreds of hours gleefully joining other players in ME3 multiplayer. RIP, BioWare. You deserved so much better

this must be what it feels like to live in gotham and friends are texting you shit like the joker just made money poisonous and the penguin has had an army in the sewer for over 6 years now

I take it as a good sign that I broke something with #tupo overnight, and by the time I woke up I had multiple messages reporting the issue, and somebody had already posted a workaround on Mastodon. The Web can still be a really wonderful place.

I've gotten three different messages about the same #tupo hint today. That 2 in row 2 is a really tricky deduction. It's a good thing, really; I was worried the game might get too easy for people. But only 7% of today's recorded solvers managed a perfect game, so it looks like we're safe there. 😅

It was a rough week for the 5x5 puzzles. There were nearly 50% more perfect solves on Thursday *alone* than there were on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday *combined.*

Man, today's #tupo was brutal. Perfect solves dropped to barely over 10%. (For context: Mondays usually have close to a 50% perfect rate, and yesterday was ~35%.) Solve times across the board went up by 3x to 5x from yesterday to today. Hints and checks were also up by 2–5x usual rates.

I will say: an early deduction in today's puzzle required a specific kind of logical leap I've never observed before. By whatever chance, the puzzle generation algorithm really threw a curveball today.

Genuinely might need to stop letting my kid watch football until after the midterms. Republican political ads are the absolute most unabashed, vile, full-throated bigotry he's ever been exposed to by an unimaginably wide margin.

For real though: every Republican attack ad in the Midwest is like DID YOU KNOW [Democratic candidate] once said something POSITIVE about BLACK PEOPLE!? Did you know they also DON'T HATE TRANS PEOPLE!? They ALSO once AGREED with someone from CALIFORNIA!! Or maybe NEW YORK!!! [b&w picture of AOC]

Once again: you can't out-Coke Coke. It's not possible to make your drink so much like Coke that Coke drinkers will start drinking it, because you've just offered what they already have. What you *have* done, however, is given everyone who *doesn't* want Coke a great reason to look elsewhere.

Democrats will never learn.

Not that any of this matters; game theory still isn't a good reason to throw trans people under the bus, even if it did work in the short term. But we accept the far right framing so unquestioningly, we've let ourselves be convinced the key to winning is letting the opposing coach call our plays.

Hey @netlify.com I love your service, but receiving this email with absolutely zero warning was an extremely negative experience. I had no idea payment had failed (and if I had, I would've fixed it). This was the very first I ever heard of it. I even searched my email and dashboard to be sure.

I don't know if maybe this is because I'm still on a legacy plan, so that makes me an edge case. I also hadn't actually been billed for anything in a few years, so that probably created a perfect storm. Still: this seems to be a hole in the system I would enthusiastically encourage plugging.
