Despite the significant investments ploughed into artificial intelligence it has provided “zero payoff” to corporate America outside of technology, according to Apollo's Chief Economist Torsten Slok. Read more: bloom.bg/3UO2c30 📷: Victor J. Blue/Bloomberg

Outside of tech there has been no financial payoff to US companies for using AI, now viewed as a margin-hurting cost center, as VC-backed firms burn more tokens (Torsten Slok/Apollo Global Management) Main Link | Techmeme Permalink

Another day, another Trump rape revealed.

Prem Thakker ツ@premthakker.bsky.social

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

i got into this whole industry thinking (wrongly) that the mainstream press just had to systematically be corrected and nudged in the right direction after decades of right-wing bullying. no. the right has a noise machine. the way to combat that noise machine is to out-shout it. period.

Arthur N. reposted

hm. lula succeeded by out-shouting the right and not begging for the press to do the lift for him and his supporters? wow, wonder who has been saying something like that in america for almost 20 years?

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

And credit to him, it worked. A sort of digital levee en masse, literally raising an army to counteract the forces that artificially amplify far-right messaging. He did that through organizing and messaging, both on the streets and online, that was so relentless that he put himself in the hospital.

NBA announcer: You can really feel the electricity in the arena tonight! Me (carefully taking their mic away from them): I think that's a bad ground you've got there.

Bill Maher had lunch with Donald Trump again. It’s beyond belief that someone would so willingly sit down for a meal with such a reprehensible piece of shit. But I’m sure Trump had his reasons.

PHP hero has jokes!

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

So a volunteer IT engineer from Czechia has fixed the PHP issue that blocked 70% of all websites. Imagine if this guy was working for Elon Musk instead…

Business Insider confirms it: Amazon has warehouses of GPUs that can’t be installed, and is buying them so far in advance that a supply chain team said they “didn’t have a clear forecasted path” to installing them. www.businessinsider.com/amazon-220-b...

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

Free newsletter: I estimate that ~50% of AI chip sales - $200bn to $300bn+ - are sitting in warehouses, with NVIDIA selling hundreds of billions of GPUs years in advance. Data centers take way longer to build than hyperscalers are leading us to believe. www.wheresyoured.at/wherere-all-the-ai-chips/

Allow me to finish with a question: Does any of this feel like the future? Are you witnessing the next industrial revolution? Or are you watching the spark that ignites the next financial crisis? And are you sufficiently angry at the people responsible? www.wheresyoured.at/ai-had-bette...

I also wanted to pull out a special part of the piece: fuck Jensen Huang. By forcing customers to take early delivery of GPUs to boost quarterly revenues, he artificially inflated the price of RAM and every consumer electronic. What he and his hyperscale paypigs have done is morally reprehensible.

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

Free newsletter: In July, Apollo Economist Torsten Slok said that "AI better work out, or we have a problem." Facing ever-growing high-interest debt, negative-EBITDA AI labs and $200bn+ in warehoused GPUs, that's exactly what the AI industry has. www.wheresyoured.at/ai-had-bette...

While I don't disagree with the ejection in any way, this is yet another example of why football is a weird game. Snap someone's leg in half on a legal play - no penalty. Get someone's uniform slightly moist in a disrespectful way - automatic ejection! * *See also: Take a swing at your opponent...

CJ Fogler@cjzero.bsky.social

CJ Gardner-Johnson ejected for spitting at Brock Bowers, told Brady "I promise, you can watch the film"

.. while both players are protected from head to toe with a helmet & many pounds of pads (seriously, you couldn't hurt the guy no matter how hard you punch him) vs just line up and run the next play, and there's certainly a non-zero chance of causing a devastating injury to your opponent. 🤷‍♂️

Maybe after the containment arch is repaired, and the old remains of the reactor building eventually disassembled, they should ship all the pieces to Moscow. What's the old expression again? Oh yeah, "If you break it, you bought it."

Euromaidan Press@euromaidanpress.bsky.social

The G7 plans to allocate 260 million euros to repair the steel arch over the destroyed Chornobyl reactor after a Russian drone tore a hole in its roof Overall repair would cost at least 500 million euros and had to be finished by 2030 to limit corrosion euromaidanpress.com/2026/10/17/g...

A "Scaramucci" is still the standard unit of measurement. All other press secretaries are measured against a Scaramucci, even those fired more quickly. There isn't any need to muck up the units with more metric v. imperial faultlines.

Oh, wow! I hadn't noticed the date.

Michael Santoli@michaelsantoli.bsky.social

At the NYSE this morning, a floor old-timer came by and said, "Friday Oct. 16, Monday is Oct. 19 - just like in '87..." Sure. One thing different from '87 is you didn't then have people with living memory of a one-day 22% crash who saw a possible rerun on the screen when they blur their eyes...

Again, it's not a joke. Trump is entirely serious.

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

Trump: “I'm waiting for accolades from the press, and they said, “what about the cost of beef?” Boeuf? You know what boeuf is? Expensive beef. When you go to a French restaurant. It's boeuf. Those are stupid people.

This is an example of the type of statement that people use as an example when they say Trump has a sense of humor. Basically, an insult, followed by a brag. People assume that it's funny because Trump doesn't actually mean it. He does.

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

Trump: “If you are in doubt about somebody's name from the Middle East, just say Mohammed. You have about a 65% chance. “I've done it for years now. I've never been wrong.”

I leave this definition of the word "prescient" for no reason in particular. Prescient is an adjective meaning having or showing knowledge of events before they happen, or possessing remarkable foresight and intuition.

I was watching a Blondie concert from 1977 on YouTube, and it occurred to me that I have never really taken the time to figure out who's who with the guys in the group, because, let's face it, it's difficult to take one's eyes off Debby for more than a second or two. So I was looking on my phone...

..for a picture from the late 70s to do a little research to see if I could figure it out when I glance at the TV, and Debby Harry is playing the trumpet! Long story short, I still don't know who the guys are, and I don't really care.
