🧵In support of NOAA+OAR+NSSL's R2O efforts, for those here involved in severe-storm warning operations, I'll share some results from my current study on radar-based prediction of hail size, which focuses on improved detection of giant hail. Background info (from an article submitted to WAF) (1/11)

Those at the NWC (Norman, OK) interested in early voting (Wed-Fri, 8am-6pm) can do so at the nearby Noble Public Library (3 miles south of the NWC; but you must be registered to vote in Cleveland County). If you decide to drive down to the Library, @swingleft.bsky.social (east) at the McClain Bank.

It’s not just about affordability. Maybe for the first time since 1974, voters say their main concern heading into the midterms is corruption in government. Great to see.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has announced that he would support the energy ceasefire. He always supported ceasefires. He offered them numerous times. Putin and Russia never did. But this puts the ball back in Putin‘s (and Trump‘s) court.

Gratitude, humility, responsibility: Those are the virtues our overlapping histories should instill. But the new right turns that upside-down. It replaces gratitude with a sense of entitlement, humility with arrogance, and a sense of duty with the will to power and the right to dominate.

Time lapse of nocturnal convection in Goodland, KS during the late evening on Wednesday August 19, 2026. View looking toward the SSW. In this case, a long-lived, eastward moving anticyclonic supercell (and descending precipitation core) passes just south of the NWS office. #kswx #cowx #newx

For anyone interested in radar-based hail detection, and who did not attend the 32nd SLS conference last week, here is a copy of our poster. #32SLS #AMSMadisonSummit

A confirmed large significant tornado is ongoing on the southwest side of the Appleton, WI area. Huge debris ball and dual-pol tornadic debris signature in NEXRAD radar data. #wiwx

The 12Z GRB sounding aptly indicated the risk of very large hail (high CAPE and very elongated hodograph) with this morning's intense hailstorms across northern WI (multiple reports of hail up to 3 inches in diameter).

United Airlines has basically melted down today. Computer crash delayed morning flights, United ops decided to prioritize moving airplanes instead of passengers. And now bad weather has flights diverting all over the place. Passengers have no idea what's going to happen to them.

So far this year we've had: the warmest winter on record in the mountain west, a record-shattering heat wave in Europe, once in a thousand year rainfall and flooding texas and forest fire smoke blanketing the mid west and the north east. Feels like something's going on with the climate!

A New York poll worker says two federal agents confronted her at her polling place over a social media post criticizing ICE. The incident didn't disrupt voting, but it raises a bigger question: why is ICE keeping tabs on the people helping run our elections?
