I'm not sure how much more blatant it can get that these guys are looting the federal government and then pointing over there and saying "look what THOSE BLACK PEOPLE ARE GETTING AWAY WITH!!!" bsky.app/profile/atru...

Stephen Miller claims Somali-Americans in Minnesota are "buying Mercedes, buying BMWs, they buy a nice house, all their kids fly first class all over the world" (This is a lie!)

I'm attending an online conference. It's pretty good, but I'm not thrilled that I was cut off before my time was complete only to have an older man go off on an extended "get off my lawn" rant without interruption.

Paxton has to be one of the most evil men in the country. Many children will die because of this. Pediatricians will flee Texas because of this and children will die from causes that have nothing to do with vaccines because there are no doctors to care for them.

nytimes.comTexas Pediatricians Face Paxton Investigations for Vaccinating Children (Gift Article)Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general and Republican Senate candidate, has alleged a sprawling profit-driven conspiracy. Pediatricians say the accusations are an attempt at intimidation.

I’d contribute here but I’m not sure how much the average reader is interested in Building Scientific Apparatus and looking up the spec sheets of photodiodes online…

You know what? He's absolutely right. I'll post screenshots of a few courses in the replies here.

This graph represents probably more than a hundred thousand hours of work by our community. Every year when I look at it I think our current proposal model is broken.

This was posted on LinkedIn. Looks like a new record, possibly 3500 proposals. Good luck everyone on the JWST roulette. We really should have made two.

Pretty clear to me there’s a very good case against this man for mass murder, and I’m saying that in as measured a fashion as I can. He’s order the killing of 234 people under no plausible war or legal justification. I am skeptical he will ever face legal accountability for til his but he should.

Hegseth: "The ideological clowns are out. The patriotic cowboys are in, with testosterone testing on top."

The NYT has an article today on how Mary Peltola treated her congressional staff. I'm old enough to remember the many times this story has run before with a different (woman's) name in the headline. Presumably, men in power behaving like assholes behavior is considered normal, therefor unnewsworthy.

They also made him sleep on the floor of a holding cell. With the bullet in his back. And no pain medication. They also failed to provide medical care after they shot him. People need to go to prison for this.

We purchased our 1954 house from the original owners, who designed it so that there were no steps in the home because the wife's brother was in a wheelchair from childhood polio. How quickly we forget.

I need younger generations to understand how weird it is that trump is such a unique terrible fuck up that it’s actually correct to blame the president for a demonstrably shittier economy and costs

We also know that AI is only helpful if you have the discipline specific skills and knowledge to understand when, how, and why the AI is giving you incorrect results. Therefore the most important thing we can do to prepare students to work with AI is double down on the fundamentals.

Be cautious about reports of life/biosignature detection on planets other than Earth. Any initial signs are likely to be low signal to noise and/or subject to other interpretations.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

I'm a UT Austin grad, so it breaks my heart to see the state throwing out the academic freedom that has made our universities (yes, even TAMU) great institutions.

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

"Academic freedom" at work in Texas.

I sat behind John Cornyn once on a flight to D.C. (I always joke that he was the one who gave me covid.) At the end of the flight, a woman came up to hand him a note thanking him for his work. Our leaders live in this bubble of constant glazing and kills normal human barometers.

bought candy at the pool for a 13yo and she tried to give me cash. i was like nahh it's nbd, and she goes "girl i have seen your car." 13yo girls remain undefeated. you think you're talking to a child but you're actually talking to whatever gods used to send to punish mortals for their hubris

I helped manage UT Austin's covid response in 2020. One thing that immediately became clear is how hard health messaging is: too much nuance and people tune out; too little, and you risk getting called a liar when best practice shifts.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

One of the worst things about the Senate’s attempted Fauci show trial is how the supposed evidence against him is early in COVID he considered multiple hypotheses, then increasingly ruled some unlikely as evidence came in. The objection is he did science. Fundamentally that is what’s under attack.

She is also such a great human.

A lot of this relied on the unpaid labor of women, so a recovery is not just a matter of going back.

People are always talking about the things we have today that our ancestors didn't, but nobody wants to look at the things our ancestors had that we've lost. Like community, and free time, and environmental sustainability, and a collective that cares whether we live or die

Arkansas touts its designation as the “most pro-life state in America," but that clearly only applies to fetuses, not women.

ProPublica@propublica.org

NEW: She Faced a Life-Threatening Miscarriage. Under Arkansas’ Abortion Ban, Even Calls to the Governor’s Office Didn’t Help. Emily Waldorf’s case shows how abortion bans have left hospital lawyers, not doctors, deciding who gets care — and how lawmakers and regulators have failed to change that.

The answer to this depends on how you define AI. In astronomy, for example, we have been using machine learning for many years to search for features in large data sets. We develop and vet our own training sets, though. I think people mean LLMs for AI, but there is a broader set of tools.

Sue Cowley@suecowley.bsky.social

What is the problem that AI is actually solving? It mostly seems to be about workload rather than improving anything and in fact it's making significant amounts of things worse.

We've become numb to this stuff, but a president accusing a journalist of treason -- a capital crime -- for reporting on an ongoing war is not normal, and we should never accept it as normal.

Red states can cancel elections and redraw the maps to cut out Black representation without any voter input, and no one stops them. Blue state asks the voters if they wanna redistrict, the voters say yes, and the court strikes it down.

Currently in this situation, though I haven't finished yet. I did get many other things done while avoiding the task, though.
