Future Congresswoman Darializa Avila Chevalier is brutally assaulted by the NYPD while protesting an ICE shooting. Without hesitation, she gets right back up to defend her community. Most politicians would never.

In 2016, there were two competing ballot propositions about the death penalty in California. Prop 62, which would have ended the death penalty, failed. Prop 66, which claimed it would speed up the process, passed. In that same election, 61% of California voters went for Clinton over Trump.

Regular reminder that we are in dire need of new monthly subscribers 🎃 This whole trying to do marketing/promotion thing while also producing journalism is beyond exhausting. We've absolutely been slacking on it lately and we appreciate every person who has helped out!

Even if you haven't abused someone, if you are going to the mat to defending confirmed rapists, then what is the actual difference at this point?

My guess - exactly what’s happening in Chicago. Most of what ICE is doing flies under the radar because they stopped doing the shock and awe crap. People can’t respond to something that don’t know is happening.

President Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, has threatened to send a surge of ICE agents to NYC—but how would New Yorkers respond? @jacobsoboroff.bsky.social asks Chicagoans their predictions in this week’s episode of “Prediction Markets” 🛒 .

Chicago's priorities are fucked. Half the Southside is without power so folks are parked in weird places. So the city is out in force making sure they get that sweet ticket money. Who cares that the streets are impassable bc of downed trees.

Yeah, fuck that. I feel old. We might have survived dial-up, but a lot of things, including tanning beds, killed us. Anxiety wears me down, it doesn’t fuel me. ‘Get ‘gangsta’? You sound like a racist white lady.

The thing about AI, is that if it’s done properly, it requires a background in writing and an understanding of systems. So, at some point, I think it’s likely that we see an uptick in the need to hire people who know how to use words.

this is good advice but unfortunately my fallback plan (go back into tech) was the one thing even more destroyed by AI than writing was lol

I also don't think we can ask for common people to run & then immediately ignore them for the crime of being thoughtful but poor. And literally the only way to fix that is to make it commonplace to donate to smaller campaigns so they can become larger.

Well hell.

please remember if you have ADHD or autism and migraines: talk to your optometrist about your eye exam! get it done with your eyes dilated! learn to relax the muscles in your face! if you feel like you try to “win” your eye exam your prescription could be wrong!

Yeah, Daily Beast Editor is having a panic attack in the form of words on a page. He’s desperately grasping for a sense of certainty - the way people do after traumatic events. The problem is that he has a huge platform and he’s wrong.

I really think it’s important to underline that there was apparently no security breach. The gunman was confronted and stopped where he should have been according to the design—at the magnetometer perimeter. What this piece argues for is an *expansion* of the security perimeter in time and space.

I’ve been hearing so much anger and disappointment from frontline workers about the BBC investigation into fraudulent asylum claims. One of the most damning responses has come from one of the experts they interviewed, solicitor Ana Gonzalez. It’s really worth reading her response in full:

We can conservatively fit 400,000 more people in Chicago. By building more affordable homes throughout the city and expanding access to more sustainable forms of transportation, we can make this a reality.

ICE in Chicago this morning at Elston and Kennicott—a masked agent tells a witness (on the sidewalk) not to get in front of his car. Feds are continuing kidnappings across the city & burbs after increased activity this month. No flashy CBP caravans, just a steady stream of covert ICE arrests.
