Here's the deal #AtheistSky. We want to help you connect with on-the-ground activists, communities, journalists, academics, partners, and allies who are working to protect religious equality and combat White Christian Nationalism. Here's a starter pack to kick things off. Who else we should add?

Great day to be an atheist

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Wow -- RNC video: "On June 14th, 1946, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, 'I need a caretaker,' so God gave us Trump." It only gets more unhinged and culty from there.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others."

Hemant Mehta@friendlyatheist.com

Evangelist Whitney Lynn says she preaches on planes because she loves “a captive audience.” She's not alone. It's becoming a trend. If spreading your message requires listeners who can't escape, maybe it's not as compelling as you think. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/christian-...

We have been proud to be on the front lines of the fight to end child marriage alongside our partners at Unchained At Last — and our state advocates have lobbied in California for the past three years to get this bill passed. It's time to finish the job.

Nick Fish@nickfish.me

Read this great piece from Kevin Bolling at @secularstudents.bsky.social calling on California to join the growing national consensus and end child marriage once and for all.

In the Oval Office, Trump's Religious Liberty Commission chair, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, called the separation of church & state the "biggest lie that's been told in America." After reading their report, we beg to differ. Join us Monday for a town hall to break it down. atheists.org/RLC-townhall

Absolutely agree. Unlike the White Christian Nationalist movement and its acolytes, we actually care about religious freedom, pluralism, and government neutrality. And we're proud to work with Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, and Jews who share that commitment. Thank you, Professor McQuade!

As a Christian, I am deeply offended by JD Vance’s proclamation of the United States as “a Christian nation.” Our country was founded on religious freedom. Read the First Amendment— no establishment of religion. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/07/o...

In the wake of Donald Trump and his Christian Nationalist acolytes hijacking America 250 in an attempt to justify their exclusionary attacks on huge swaths of Americans, why is Chuck Schumer sharing fabricated quotes that sound like the sort of thing fake "historian" David Barton would make up?

American Atheists@atheists.org

NEWS: On Independence Day, Senator Chuck Schumer posted social media statements citing the founders' belief that the United States was "God's noble experiment." The problem? He made it up.

Chuck Schumer has spent more than 20 years claiming the Founding Fathers called America "God's noble experiment." There's no evidence any of them ever said that. Why does he keep lying about it? www.friendlyatheist.com/p/chuck-schu...

friendlyatheist.comChuck Schumer's favorite Founding Fathers quote is completely made upHistorians can't find references to "God's Noble Experiment." The Founders never said it. Yet Schumer keeps insisting they did.

Adam Keiper, executive editor at @thebulwark.com, found exactly one historical example of the phrase "God's noble experiment" being used: a book review from 1939. The only other times this phrase has *ever* been uttered? Statements from Chuck Schumer, starting in 2003 in Congress.

Adam Keiper@adamkeiper.com

FWIW, I only find one hit for the phrase in ProQuest, from a 1939 book review written by a Hillsdale professor in the journal 'Church History.' It's a review of Ray Billington's book 'The Protestant Crusade, 1800–1860.'

Jonathan lays out Schumer's outrageous fabrications here — and adds new details. They edited his Fourth of July post to remove the claim that the founders (unspecified, and apparently all at once?) uttered this sentiment as they left "Constitution [sic] Hall." Yikes.

Jonathan Larsen@jonathanlarsen.bsky.social

EXCLUSIVE: On July 4, the same day Republicans peddled lies about God and American history… …so did Chuck Schumer. I even found a Facebook post they edited…without removing the key falsehood.

Our president, @nickfish.me, was among the first to raise concerns about Schumer's claim. Joanne Freeman, a professor of history at Yale and expert on early American politics, was even more clear.

Joanne Freeman@jbf1755.bsky.social

In the well-over 100,000 documents written by founders included in the Founders Online database from the National Archives, no one uses the phrase "God's noble experiment." No one.

Independent journalist @jonathanlarsen.bsky.social found that Schumer's staff edited a Facebook post to remove an additional fabricated element: the claim that as the founders left "Constitution [sic] Hall," they called America God’s noble experiment. But the core lie remained and was repeated.

In an admittedly cursory search, literally the only references I can find to the Founders calling America "god's noble experiment" are from... Chuck Schumer speeches. Why is the Senate Democratic Leader carrying water for a right wing Christian lie? And apparently fabricating quotes to do it?

Chuck Schumer@schumer.senate.gov

The founding fathers called America God’s noble experiment. I believe in all three words to this day: we are one nation under God, we have clung to noble ideas for longer than any other nation, and we are an experiment always changing, trying to make ourselves better.

We already knew Donald Trump's Christian Nationalist speechwriters have never read the Constitution, so why would the Declaration be any different?

American Atheists reposted

In the spirit of "trying to make ourselves better," there's still time to delete this and post another version — one that doesn't buy into the divisive, ahistoric, revisionist "history" of the Christian Nationalist movement.

And when we see our government — and our history — being hijacked by the White Christian Nationalist movement, you'd better believe we dissent.

We're relieved at the outcome of today's birthright citizenship decision, but the fact that there were 4 votes to ignore the plain language of the Constitution is appalling. The White Christian Nationalist movement will keep coming for our rights and we have to act to stop them.

The only people seemingly trying to close churches are the corrupt, hypocritical leaders of the White Christian Nationalist movement. Alienating and grifting their members by covering up child abuse, excusing and encouraging masked thugs to rip families apart, and lining their own pockets.

This is America. We will fight to protect your right to believe whatever you want, even if we think it's a little silly. Because unlike the White Christian Nationalist movement, we actually care about freedom of conscience and belief. They only care about dominance and Christian supremacy.

Great op-ed from @cflfreethought.bsky.social's David Williamson "Secularism isn’t the enemy of religion; it is what prevents government from choosing one faith over another. It is a foundational principle of the American experiment, woven into the First Amendment’s protection of religious liberty."

We're still waiting to hear back from the Pentagon about how they decided how to consolidate these categories. Their "explanation" — that less information somehow helps chaplains better do their job — still doesn't hold water.

This post is unavailable.

They say their job "is not to adjudicate theological debates" but Pentagon leadership have repeatedly denigrated and attacked atheists and humanists. Their decision to include "agnostic" as a faith code, but not "atheist" or "humanist" — while also having "No Religion" — is bizarre.

As with most things this administration does on questions of religion, we're forced to assume the worst. Why keep "agnostic" but not the others? Is it because they want to send a signal to Christian Nationalist chaplains about who they should target for unconstitutional proselytizing?

While it might be more convenient for White Christian Nationalists like Pete Hegseth to pretend that atheists don't exist, simply repeating the lie doesn't make it true.

No matter how hard these extremists try, they will never succeed in writing us out of our history or silencing us. Atheist soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and guardians are patriots committed to protecting our nation and our Constitution. It’s a shame we can’t say the same thing about Hegseth.
