good piece, and interesting because (if I'm understanding it correctly) it reflects that both sides of the vibescession argument are half-right. consumer sentiment *is* tracking a material phenomenon, but it's also somewhat irrational because it's detached from real wages

G Elliott Morris@gelliottmorris.com

The index of consumer sentiment isn't broken; models that try to predict it just don't have the right input variables. I fix that and find that, yes, high nominal price levels explain why the vibes are so off. It's the prices, stupid www.gelliottmorris.com/p/2026-04-14...

Every Will Stancil complaint is like “I just can’t stand how he treats people who substitute three DoorDash screenshots for the BLS CPI like they’re stupid”

Did Mark Cuban’s kid disown him after transitioning to being FDIC insured or something?

Young men don't open bank accounts. They are too expensive. They download coin base or Robinhood app and buy crypto. That's their savings If one party pushes that number higher. They vote for em. Gensler/Biden caused those savings to go down. The demo with the biggest change was young men

blue sky is supreme because every time you post you get 100 school principals in the replies asking to see you in their office

Anti-brutalism is for empty people who believe a building should give them a soul

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Amid the orders President Trump signed on his first day back in office was a memorandum implicitly taking aim at Brutalist buildings. By revising guidelines for public buildings, he is attempting to imbue new ideals into the nation’s built environment, Anna Kodé writes. nyti.ms/4bfV8Ag

“I want Boeing and my scheming second-in-command to collaborate on a rush-job airplane” he’s clearly playing chess in dimensions the human mind cannot comprehend

Eric Lipton NYT@ericlipton.nytimes.com

NEW: Trump, frustrated by delays on new AF1s, has empowered Musk to consider drastic options to make Boeing move faster, including relaxing security standards for some working on the planes or buying a new jet to retrofit. With Maggie Haberman, Jonathan Swan and Eric Schmitt. nyti.ms/3X9UJt3

I have wondered if the New York Times has been acting as handmaidens of fascism because the paper's leaders find it appealing, but now I'm wondering how many people with prominent positions there are just genuinely stupid.

if the president’s lackeys can functionally seize control of treasury funds and dismantle a congressionally-created agency without consequence, it’s not that it’s a constitutional crisis as much as it means the constitution is vapor.

You all are talking a big game about resisting the Gulf of Mexico renaming for people who gladly complied when they invented The Southern Ocean two decades ago

The TikTok ban sets an obviously troubling precedence, but then I’ll come across a post like “Without TikTok, how are people ever supposed to learn how to file their taxes” and I suddenly feel less inclined to be concerned

NFL Sundays are a breath of fresh air on BlueSky offering a brief glimmer of hope for a future where people who have never heard of Jesse Signal post on the site.

My statistical model predicts that, after ruminating on it for 10 years, Americans will realize the horror of the Access Hollywood tape and reject the GOP and Trumpism en masse, leading to a landslide blue wave in midterms. The DNC pays me seven figures a year for these insights

The comparison to Walk Hard has been made a million times already but this feels like a fake behind the scene but they’d do to market Walk Hard

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

To become Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” Timothée Chalamet spent years practicing guitar and was even outfitted with cheek plumpers and nostril expanders.

So the unspeakable controversy of the past two days has literally been Jesse Singal having an account? You all need to just have a group chat going. You can add whoever you want; you don’t need your personal little app

I migrated here for the same reasons everyone else did, but when a lot of people panic about “protecting this place from trolls and assholes” I can’t help but think that the social media they’re looking for is an sms group chat

the college football playoff selection show is so good. it's like if the news began with 25 minutes of anchors talking to each other like "i'm looking forward to reporting the news. it will be very interesting to find out what the news will be"

Every year some 70 year old executive decides it's time to make NEW Christmas music, and it ends up sounding like the musical equivalent of not knowing what to do with your hands, followed by a chorus that says "it's Christmas time" twice.

I’ve been pondering whether or not to obey in advance lately; does anyone know a place I can see 100 identical posts a day on the topic for guidance?

Sorry everyone, BlueSky is my fault; I’m a professional focus group participant and I shout “there should be a website that gives you a hug” every time

Who could prefer old Twitter to BlueSky? Who doesn’t prefer a dozen unprompted micro-lectures about politeness over an endless parade of new, entertainingly insane weirdos?

I’m nostalgic for the old days of social media of “following my friends” instead of “interacting with users”

sarah jeong@sarahjeong.bsky.social

obviously the most recent explosion in growth is linked to the election but the enthusiastic level of engagement makes me think people are pretty hungry to interact with users who act like people instead of bots

You are up to date.
