Who could have predicted that a dedicated propaganda channel spouting anti-Scottish nonsense, retreaded English news and low-budget kailyard pap would fare so badly!

I'm against drilling for fossil fuels but isn't it odd* the BBC and Sky aren't mentioning in their reports about drilling in the Jackdaw gas field being approved that they told Scots loudly and repeatedly in 2014 that all the oil and gas would be gone within 5 years. *entirely predictable

My latest blog piece, Wednesday is GERSmas day when anti-indy parties celebrate figures purporting to show one of the most resource rich nations in northern Europe is an economic basket case & say this is why Westminster mismanagement should continue. weegingerdug.wordpress.com/2026/08/11/g...

Greenland (pop 57,000) is to hold a referendum on independence from Denmark, and Iceland (pop 394,000) is to hold a referendum on joining the EU. When is Westminster going to tell them that ‛now is not the time’? #Indyclan #IndependenceIsNormal

In the USA they have normalized people paying $12,000 a year for Health Insurance, receiving absolutely nothing, then having to pay thousands or tens of thousands of dollars more if they actually get treatment. They need to abolish Health Insurance, it's a scam.

In 2023/24 Westminster took about £88bn revenue from Scotland, refunding around £51bn to spend on our own needs. Westminster then decided how the other £37bn of our money was to be spent. The ‛block grant’ is a partial *refund* of our own money, not a gift. #IndependenceIsNormal #Scotland #Indyclan

The Christmas tree on The Mound is one of those annual institutions you kind of take for granted but I passed it by the other day and it inevitably got me thinking about how far back such a tradition of public Christmas Trees goes in Edinburgh 🎄 Shall we take a thread and find out? 🧵▶️

There were two schools built on the open-air principal in Edinburgh, at Prestonfield and Hermitage Park. A number of nurseries were also built, with full-length sliding partition walls that opened the room up to the outside, surrounded by decks and canopies to keep sun and rain off

In 1939, there were 155 open-air schools across Britain. My Substack post looks at the Aspen House Open Air School, in Lambeth - a haven for 'pre-tuberculous children' who were anaemic, asthmatic or malnourished. municipaldreams.substack.com/p/aspen-hous...

A thread of escapes from Edinburgh Zoo, which also reminded me of the Curious Incident of the Kangaroo in the Night Time [Caledonian Mercury, 24 February 1834].

A polar bear wasn't the only escapee in the early days of Edinburgh Zoo, in October 1916 a California Sealion escaped its enclosure only to have the misfortune of getting into that of the polar bears where it was mauled by Starboard and Snowball. It was rescued but succumbed to its injuries. 🦭🧵▶️

The *other* Christmassy M&S Story. Before we start I feel like I need to throw a caveat that this is not a nice, family tale like the last one. So lower expectations accordingly. This is the direct-to-video sequel with none of the main actors.
