What would it take for AI to decode animal communication?
In our new opinion piece, we argue that animal signals should not be understood only by how similar they sound, but by how the receiver perceives them.

🐒 Work with primates? Have you observed 3 or more individuals grooming together? Polyadic grooming is barely documented and we know little about its distribution. Please take 1–2 minutes to fill out this short survey and share: forms.gle/cLPB1mnwrjJo...
🚨🐵 Paid primate work: We are seeking a new camp and research coordinator for the Born To Be Wild Project; Tazekka National Park, Morocco: Details here (sadly due to funding constraints only available for EU, and potentially UK applicants at a push): groups.google.com/a/g-groups.w...
Human language is incredibly complex. But why do some primates have richer vocal repertoires than others?
Open access paper in Primates: we ask what explains that variation and how lifespan, brains, groups, & conflict have shaped primate vocal communication.

New paper: how complex is parrot communication? Yellow-naped amazons use duet calls built from 36 call types arranged by syntactic rules, with many calls biased toward or exclusive to one sex, revealing sophisticated vocal communication.

New paper in @pnas.org - using playback experiments we provide further evidence that bottlenose dolphins can use individual identity signals + social memory to guide decision-making.

📣NEW paper📣
To date, only humans demonstrate meaning-based, generative communication. However, recent discoveries of combinatorial versatility in chimpanzee + bonobo vocal sequences open the possibility of generative communication in other species. Read here 👇

📣 NEW PAPER ALERT 📣 Coordination challenges shape signal complexity in chimpanzees, but not in mangabeys. This paper is adding strength to the broader hypothesis that social complexity is a principal driver of the evolution of complex signalling. Read here👇

Intriguing!

New paper out in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: we apply linguistic tools to sperm whale vowels.
The result: sperm whale vowels do not just look like human vowels. They also behave like them.
We found several parallels. Like in Latin, whales have short and long vowels.

NEW paper alert 📣
The idea, that tool use entails more complexity than serial behavioral sequences, is out there a while. However, proving such hierarchical organization and comparing it across tasks or even species was impossible. We present a possibility to finally investigate it:
