What should cultural analytics do about genAI? We address the infrastructural force of narratives within AI corporatization, argue for constitutive humanism against a purely decorative stance, and suggest methods to examine the function of narratives within and around AI. ssrn.com/abstract=758...

If we believe in AI’s ability to control us, and AI is unable to do so, we lose little. If we don’t believe in singularity, and AI can in fact control us, we stand to lose everything. Wager, then, without hesitation, that AI is (able to control us)! Read here: begus.substack.com/p/pascals-wa...

interesting talk about, in part, whale language. for whatever reasons i went into this pretty knee-jerk skeptical about such claims but was more or less converted. hello, whales archive.org/details/redw...

How to approach an unknown language in the ocean? Here’s one of the first cases of AI interpretability leading to a scientific discovery -- in whales.

Not transformer-based, but a GAN language model has helped with this already!
We built an artificial baby model that learns language directly from raw sound and trained it to imitate whale speech. Then we looked inside. Our interpretability method recovered the properties biologists already thought were meaningful and pointed out those that had not been considered before.

We form our identities always in relation to the other. The other used to be the animals, now the other is artificial, silicon intelligence. This provides an opportunity to identify as a biological intelligence that will unite the natural world. begus.substack.com/p/the-next-t...

Perhaps the next Theory of Evolution is the realization that we are just one of many possible and diverse intelligences and that our legal, societal, and value systems should be adjusted accordingly. Read full essay here: begus.substack.com/p/the-next-t... Or: zenodo.org/records/2307...

What is college if knowledge, teaching, and advising are available from machines? One model has answers to many challenges that AI is posing today: residential education where students learn from each other to be bold, original, and uniquely human while living, eating and socializing together.

I'm presenting this today, 1pm PST/4pm EST, lmk if you'd like a zoom link.
My coping mechanism in the age of AI: write more Proto-Indo-European papers. Here’s a story on the origin of PIE mobility. I argue that in Pre-PIE, a rule operated that whereby heavy syllables attracted stress from the root to the ending. I focus on root nouns and verbs.
I'm presenting this at Berkeley Linguistics' Phorum. LMK if you'd like to zoom in.

Great point @begus.bsky.social. As @robert-booth.bsky.social writes about puzzling Joycean lingo now uttered by agential AI, "Latent Spacecraft" (with @ninabegus.bsky.social) researched both "Finnegans Wake" as a written-out latent space and artificial neural networks as babbling engines

"Latent Spacecraft: Brains, GANs, Finnegans," with the brilliant @ninabegus.bsky.social, @begus.bsky.social & Riccardo Petrini, is still major for us. An artificial neural network's vector space becomes navigable. "Finnegans Wake," James Joyce's novel, gets read as a latent space
