I thought the “socially awkward white male nerd to fascist pipeline” was sufficiently obvious in 2017 as to not require further elaboration. But considering these guys are not only still around but more active than ever, I clearly was wrong about that. I went down that pipeline and came back. A 🧵

My 8 year old says his ambition is to be a celebrity actor who also owns a restaurant. This sounds unrealistic until you compare it to my career plan at that age, which was to do something like Knight Rider or the A-Team.

Back when I was learning how to be more outgoing, I fell into learning how to become one of *those guys* that constantly "flirts" with every woman. I know I made some feel like Maura describes. I was reading Redpill/Manosphere stuff ofc but that doesn't excuse me, I was in my 30s, I knew better.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

In a small town local Lego store (not a Lego company store) and I swear there’s a couple of high schoolers in here building a kit together as a date. Where was this when I was in high school?! Kids these days don’t know how good they have it.

I can't believe I just figured this out: this place allows only 300 characters of post, but 2000 characters of ALT text. So if you want to post something *long*, put it in an image and also put it in the ALT text. I feel like this is a major scientific discovery for me.

Was watching an old Simpsons where Homer was reading "TV Guide" and for some reason I was amazed to be that it was a "digest size" magazine. How did I not remember that, and why do I find it revelatory to be reminded of it?

the white american longing for the post 9/11 unity they think they remember from 25 years ago is, i think, just asshole Americans missing being the "us" vs the "them" in a way they havent been able to enjoy since trump came down that escalator

At least one "photography" group I'm in is posts of grainy, old, faded photos from the 80s or whatever asking for someone to help "clean them up", and somebody always responds like they just asked an LLM to describe the photo and fed that back in as the prompt to generate a new "clean" one.

Most of the American right believes its perfectly fine for white men to have to sex with women of other races (especially East Asian), but a white woman who has sex with a man of another race (especially Black) is a race-traitor. "Everything is about race except race, which is about sex."

The Axe Murderer@axe1975.bsky.social

"Intersectionality" is a 10-dollar-word for stuff like how racism and sexism combine when its white men wishing it was still illegal for white women to fuck anyone of any other race.

When I go back to The Other Place to lurk, I'm bombarded with "yeah, sure, I'm trans, but I'm not *woke*, so the party that really just wants to put all trans people in a woodchipper isn't going to do anything to *me*" takes. Is that really still where we are? Feels so early 2025.

It's easy to overthink the (ridiculous) GOP backslide into "Communism" as the bogeyman. Yeah, it smells Fascist, and its 100% Fascism-compatible. But its mostly just the senility of the GOP base. They're trying to whip up voters who were full-grown-assed adults when Reagan was President. That's it.

There’s two kinds “corruption”. There’s the kind where someone has more power than they can handle, and get drunk on it, and their downfall is paved with good intentions. Then there’s the other kind, where power attracts people with bad intentions already. We are mainly governed by the latter today.

The median voter has a weird mishmash of opinions that do not align with any internally consistent political framework. They may be pro-choice but believe vaccines cause autism. They may want universal healthcare and mass deportations. They think being gay is a sin but their beloved sister is trans.

Party etiquette question: the hosts let guests into the bedroom to use the bathroom. You notice someone (not you) puked on the bed. Do you tell them, change out the sheets for them, or pretend you didn’t see it? Would it matter if both you and them were superheros? (Actual dream I just woke from)

"King Arthur comes back in 2026 and immediately starts fighting the English to restore Romano-Celtic Britain" is an (I think) under-utilized plotline. Writers, take it, I claim no ownership. Do something with it.

Its too early in morning and I haven't had enough coffee to try to articulate it, but it bet it's CAUSED an escalation among the far right and cops. Like, now they can't use harmless weed offenses to target immigrants, the poor, and the young - so they found other shit to be even more violent about.

It’s so funny you can just buy THC at the grocery store and it changed basically nothing about society

Today I learned that the reason why VT100 terminal shit works when you directly "docker exec" into Linux from windows without running any kind of "terminal emulator" program is because the command prompt IS a terminal emulator, since Windows 10. Nerds - we won. We made them give us ANSI.SYS back.

I use "git bash" as my default terminal on Windows and completely ignore the existence of both cmd.exe and powershell - and have been like this since, like, 2014. So this news missed me until now.

Anybody *still* on board with Trump at this point won't care. For a nontrivial number of his voter base, the killing of Iranians and the destruction of Iran as a country is a good *in and of itself*, worth sacrificing American lives to achieve. Not destroying to remake it, just destroying it.

Ron Filipkowski@ronfilipkowski.bsky.social

A 25 and 19 year old dead in another endless Republican Middle East war while Trump played golf, hosted a high dollar fundraiser, and tried to jump on a stage to act like he won the World Cup.

About the most "modern" thing to say about war is that it's the human activity that most involves extraordinary sacrifice of life and limb for little or no lasting impact. Irreplaceable human beings spent to gain a few meaningless yards of ground. It's also one of the oldest things. Homer knew this.

The archaic greeks were not strangers, and that's why the classics interest us. If you're looking for amoral and emotionally curtailed (complimentary) warrior brutes in a society glamourising this, you won't find them there. You won't even really find them in Conan the barbarian.

Remember when Odysseus meets Achilles in Hades and praises his death and Achilles is like "I was a moron Odysseus, Odysseus I was a fool, I should better have been a hired hand, it wasn't worth it Odysseus" lol. The homeric epic itself is critical of glorious death in battle!

The software world is lousy with things that, when created, were described as "lightweight" or "simple" but in reality are all exactly as complicated as all the alternatives.

We were stopped at a traffic light yesterday behind a guy in a pickup who had a whole nude foot, with a toe ring, hanging out the driver's side window, while he was driving. If I stipulate that I was not in Florida, you should already know that there were some New Hampshire plates on that truck.

It's a double-edged sword. When you can tell when they're into you, you also when they're *not* into you. Which is a lot of the time. Now of course this is also a good thing. But a lot of men I think this is part of why they oppose feminism. They don't wanna know how many women don't find them hot.

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

we do the ha-ha clueless thing but the truth imo is that it is culturally possible to grow up male-- and this is not intended as self-flagellation, just as descriptive-- without really internalizing that women also have sexual agency, which means you miss when they're exercising it at you

The $20 bills I just got out of the ATM are "series 2017A" and feel (and smell) like they've never been in circulation before. Like they're Rip Van Winkled their way from 2017 to now. I'm like, "hi guys! I hate to tell you, the same dude is still President now"

The fertility crisis is actually just White people being scared that there are too many Brown and Black people on the planet 😞

This probably says more about me than it does about anything important, but, as far as I'm concerned, "HR Lady" should be one of the proverbial "sexy" jobs, like Teacher or Cable Guy or "French" Maid, and overrepresented in porn movies and shitty Halloween costumes. Anyway, fuck Platner.

Max Kennerly@maxkennerly.bsky.social

A stronger "HR lady" element in Dem politics would've nuked Platner sooner but instead a bunch of credulous & insecure dolts with podcasts & substacks just had to let their masculinity issues give Dems a candidate who imploded less than a month after winning the primary.

As a scientist who is frustrated by poor reasoning in the literature and who teaches biology as well as philosophy of science, I can tell you that science training definitely needs to include more philosophy and history. The people who always pit STEM vs. the humanities would like to destroy both.

I saw someone use “tysm” meaning “thank you so much” and spent about 30 seconds wondering if it was short for autysm, the quirky old fashioned way to spell autism

The “vibe shift” proclaimed Nov. 2024 - Jan. 2025 was just some elites—in business, media, law, and some higher ed admins—who kinda liked the fascism and gave themselves permission to accommodate it. That’s all it ever was. A close presidential election is not somehow a binding cultural referendum.
