A little late, my #cheltlitfest wrap up. A quieter one for me this year, because of work stuff.
Highlights were Patrick Radden Keefe, the Times & Sunday Times team on a year in books, Djamel White on his debut novel and @backlisted.bsky.social’s Andy Miller and Hermione Lee on Anita Brookner.
This week's AUDITORY, written and narrated by Andy Miller, is available now via the Backlisted Patreon.
Claude Debussy, Images, Série II.
Debussy's book 'Monsieur Croche, antidilettante' (1921) and 'The Debussy Film' (Ken Russell, 1965), starring Oliver Reed.

September was an excellent reading month. The Palm house requires a reread. The Capote* was amazingly crazy and atmospheric. I adored the greengage summer. Amsterdam* enjoyable and funny. Disgrace* provoked discussion on Patreon.
*Grateful to @backlisted.bsky.social for these
Typically brilliant witty self-deprecation from Mr Miller.
The writing in these pieces is so good. Better than it needs to be, which is what writing needs to be.
“The chorus is so catchy that had more milkmen heard it, there might still be milkmen.”

Mambo's on French New Wave watching duty this weekend, so Diesel and I are loving, gripped by, the sheer poetry of this Canadian wonder.
Actual poetry too.

‘Booker win was “disastrous and life-changing” for Anita Brookner.’
Hermione Lee’s interview with Andy Miller at the Cheltenham Literature Festival makes page 3 of The Times today.

Utterly delightful back-catalogue episode of @backlisted.bsky.social, for the (witchy) season that’s in it, about ‘Lolly Willowes’ by Sylvia Townsend Warner, who herself was quite a fascinating character. 📚💚 www.backlisted.fm/episodes/8-s...
Another wonderful piece. After a listen to the song lauded in this week's instalment I've decided that I prefer Andy's writing about the song much more than the song itself.
This is great as usual, on the pleasure of not one-hit wonders, but the artists who release one thing we love in a career to which we are otherwise indifferent. As an aside I have always said that if their first single had been on Postcard things might have been very different

Lovely afternoon at #cheltlitfest: Andy Miller interviewing Hermione Lee on Anita Brookner and a chat with John Mitchinson in the book signing queue. It doesn’t get much more @backlisted.bsky.social than that.
An excellent evening listening to
@imcmillan.bsky.social talking about his new collection of poems “Red River Valley”.
Talked Barnsley v Grimsby and then he also very kindly signed my copy of “Under The Volcano” from the brilliant @backlisted.bsky.social episode. The best type of evening 😊
This week's reading. Lots of time on trains at the weekend. I hadn't read the whole of Autumn Journal before but the weather got colder and the @backlisted.bsky.social episode with Samuel West is inspiring. More in alt text
Sunday reading and current audiobook. There was no time for music today. Both come one way or another through @backlisted.bsky.social or a fellow listener.
Here’s hoping these two books will help make up for a Halloween with no Backlisted episode. Your disembodied voices will be missed, @andrewmale.bsky.social and @drlauravarnam.bsky.social! 👻
May I someday learn what Gene Kelly movies these books most resemble.
Andy Miller from @backlisted.bsky.social joins me to take a look back at Marvel's surprisingly dark and adult interlinked series following Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, The Punisher and Daredevil as vigilantes at large in downtown New York.

Well, this installment of INVENTORY is absolutely gorgeous...
In the warbled words of Julie Andrews, 'these are a few of my favourite things' discussed wonderfully by Andy... 🙏💙
This week's reading and re-reading. A mixed selection! Finished the first two, carried on with the third and read some bits of Arthur Machen prompted by mentions on the @backlisted.bsky.social chat.
First heard it on my fave podcast, w. Steve Coogan as guest. Many podcasts annoy me w. stoned/drunk rambling from punchable dudebros.
#Backlisted isn’t like that. Smart bookish Brits w. BBC quality voices, polished delivery & genuine wit.

Latest read, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1760) by Laurence Sterne; famous, hence over-analyzed but that's mostly "cock & bull". It's simply fun, wry, about life (& writing), full of anecdotes & digressions. Don't concern yourself with plot, Sterne doesn't.
Loved it.
