We know how to solve poverty We know how to solve homelessness We already have an understanding of the causes WE ALREADY KNOW THE SOLUTIONS!!! It’s not a question of how or why anymore it’s a question of when are we going to start… It all starts with an unconditional basic income…

My first thought this morning? Victoria and Vancouver will need to work together to counter the cuts and setbacks that are coming. Harm reduction, non-market housing finance, housing density, etc, are all on the chopping block. @seanorr.bsky.social @lucymaloney.bsky.social Let’s hold the line.

The complexity of the 21st century requires the economy of the 21st century with the solid floor of UBI. Everyone could do with support with bandwidth, executive function and the ability to slow down.

There are plenty of socialists who support UBI, specifically because it makes it a lot less risky to do socialism in a capitalist world: people are a lot more willing to unionize / join strikes, or quit their jobs and form cooperatives, when they no longer fear doing so will cause them to starve.

Cost of sweeps in #yyj incidentally is $12,877 per day (386,310/month) Also, if we go by the lower amount of keeping somone unhoused per month due to lost opportunity costs, health and other emergency services, it's (with over 1700 unhoused) over 7 million/month. You know, speaking of "budgeting."

Return money's functionality as a unit of measure and power of genuine choice back to the people. Basic income is a solid foundation needed for needed progress.

Almost half of British Columbians have a candidate on their ballot who signed our pledge to work towards a guaranteed basic income in BC if elected. This is the investment BC's future needs. See who's on the list:

With poverty you're either paying to address it one way, or paying to address it another. Letting it play out costs even more. Better to address it up front in a way that is most effective, dignified and inexpensive. Welcome to basic income. bsky.app/profile/scot...

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world. This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵

'Time poverty' is one of modern capitalism’s least discussed forms of deprivation. When a person has no hours in a day to see friends, to recover, and to relax, life becomes something squeezed around work.

Genuine question about "sweeps." Does anyone genuinely think that if we just keep making life horrid for our most vulnerable that one morning we're going to wake up and everyone on Pandora will be gone? Like "gosh, I guess we told them." Seriously? Anyone believe that? bsky.app/profile/bire...

There is no reason why this can’t be done in a Lot of other places….

Right now we have a UBI, it's just set at $0. We can decide it should be higher than that. We can decide no-one needs to prove why they get to survive. We're also better off if we do this, but that shouldn't need be said. Because it just damn well shouldn't.

"But how do we pay for it?" Pay for what, capitalism? We already are. Caregivers, interns, wage theft, subsidies, bailouts, our data, the environment. Nobody asks for a funding source there. 🤷 How about capitalism steps up and pays for basic income?

What if social protection started with trust, not suspicion? Too often, access to social support comes with conditions: proving you are poor enough, showing you are actively looking for work, or demonstrating you deserve help. Basic income offers a different starting point.

NEW: A groundbreaking pilot project in which Indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon were given an unconditional basic income significantly improved community wellbeing, strengthened food security and supported rainforest protection, according to analysis by the University of Bath released today.

Lucy, 100% It's a non-question anyways. Basic income is just a floor, we always decide how much of what we decide to invest in and we live in an age of hyper financialization, rentierism, compound capital and old out of date systems. "Whatever we need, we can afford." J.M. Keynes.

BC Greens' new platform includes UBI to support workers displaced by technologies like AI. But it's about much more than that -- economic freedom, saying no to a bad situation, saying yes to pursuing one's potential.
