Well, WOIM is indeed fun so far! I am a bit baffled as to why it tells me I should play with a controller. It is - as I would have expected - way nicer on keyboard.

This looks like fun!

Cedar Studios@cedarstudiosuk.bsky.social

Following on from our previous post... WOIM is out now on Steam! We had the best time creating the music and sound for this wibbly-wobbly puzzler. ๐Ÿชฑ๐ŸŽฎ Go get 'em ๐ŸŽ store.steampowered.com/app/4272020/...

When I was working at Volta XR I hit basically this same problem. Latency makes it tricky, too. Even if you replace (say) Twitch chat with some much faster way for the audience to interact, they're still interacting with what they're seeing, which is often 10+ seconds in the past.

Claire Blackshaw@evilkimau.bsky.social

Always wanted to capture more ways to perform. Multiplayer, twitch and voice commands showed me we needed a generic signals API to super boost. Client couldn't keep up. I thought I had the solution. It was a gadget that never shipped and one of the last things Alex and I worked on before we left.

And this is not only relevant to AI. It's relevant to wanting to be good at almost anything.

one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting

And in the process, does it impart infinite kinetic energy to a bunch of other stuff, smashing everything in the level to bits?

Freya Holmรฉr@freya.bsky.social

coding things yourself is cool bc you get to ask yourself questions like, does an infinitely strong spring contract to 0 length if given 0 seconds to act?

Thing I'm really interested in but will never find out: How many highly successful commercial games secretly have trash tier implementations of most subsystems?

Why is it that oat milk in tea is really nice but making a latte with oat milk results in horrible, cursed swamp drink that I can't even finish? :-(

Looking at this on Steam without having played it yet, I'm strongly reminded of the classic boardgame Diamant. If so, I'm excited to see what they've done with it.

97% Overwhelming Positive, 600 reviews And that's on a demo!! store.steampowered.com/app/4760210/...

Oh no, this is a disaster! I had long since concluded that physics in 3D games was so bad it should be used only as a special effect. But this... this one might be usable and then I'll be tempted! :-O

Erin Catto@erincatto.bsky.social

Iโ€™m happy to announce the release of a new open source 3D physics engine called Box3D. Iโ€™ve been working on this project for a few years now, but it represents over 20 years of experience writing physics engines for games. Read more here: box2d.org/posts/2026/0...

Re: Capitalisation of PascalCase names. The standard is to alternate capitalisation at random according to the degree of uncertainly. So, for example: * Use VideoKeyFrame 70% of the time. * Use VideoKeyframe 30% of the time. The time you save on thinking about this is worth the compile errors.

Added ability to embed scenes into scripts, because I can. #GodotEngine #gamedev #indiedev

Explain your @ Mine's a tarot card. In particular, it's the first of the major arcana. It literally means "juggler", but is sometimes a magician - a different kind of performer - and sometimes an actual wizard. Computation is just another kind of magic ("computer wizard"), so it's a play on that.

Ozzy@karohemd.eurosky.social

Explain your @ Karohemd is German for checked shirt. Anyone who's met me IRL when it's below 20 degrees will know why. :) I chose the nick when I set up my first yahoo email address. I didn't want to be Ozzy3920 so I was looking for something unique to me. Managed to use it everywhere but steam.

Powerful new way to waste ten minutes using Unity: * Zoom in the game view to inspect some pixels. * Exit play mode. * Do some more dev work. * Enter play mode again, forgetting about the zoom thing. * Wonder where the actual f*** your in-game UI has gone. #protip #gamedev

I'm proud, excited (and a little bit nervous) to announce that CROWNBREAKERS will launch on Kickstarter May 12, 2026 - 4:00 PM CEST (Central Europe Summer Time). www.kickstarter.com/projects/sha... #gamedev #kickstarter #indiedev #deckbuilder #turnbasedthursday (a day late, I know...)

I really should come up with a better naming convention for my methods. Currently I use -Async to mean both c# Task/await style threaded async and also things which do work and then call a callback. This gets confusing, since the two don't play nicely together. :-/

So, with apologies to Luis, one of the most important game design lessons I ever learned is why this is wrong. :-P

Probably the most memorable paragraph I've ever read in a game manual. I think about it a lot. Basically saying that "rules are for the small-minded and weak", because kids don't need a manual to play and have fun.

I've spent a lot of time watching kids play and the reason they have so much fun is mainly because their standards are low. They get excited about Haribo and McDonalds for the same reason.

The best thing about unregulated play is that its lets you find interesting new things. Don't stop there! Rules are the language that let you refine and share what you found.

It is, of course, quite true that unregulated play can be excellent fun with the right players. However, the value of rules systems isn't to constrain play, it's to introduce players to something beautiful they wouldn't have found on their own.

The job of a game designer is in some sense to say: "Hi players, I've spent 2000 hours exploring this particular rule space so that you can see all the highlights in 20 hours".

Ran into mention of this new www.indiepass.com thing today... ...can someone explain to me why this isn't a horrible idea? From my perspective the whole idea of indie development is to move further away from a winner-takes-all, race-to-the-bottom market, not towards one.

ANNOUNCEMENT: I will stop running "scheduled" Ludum Dare events in 3 years! "Scheduled" is the key word though. My hope is that leaders within the community can build something better, more welcoming, that honors our legacy. They've got 3 years to figure it out. You even get to study me. ๐Ÿ˜‹ #LDJam

Unsurprisingly everyone's all grumpy about the Bluesky AI nonsense, but consider this: What kind of enshittification would you like to see here? Don't answer "none", because of course, but that doesn't fund the system.

Suits are bad at making game development decisions. Keith puts it more diplomatically than I would, but no punches are pulled here.

MISSING! HELP! I am looking for the playing card deck from GDC 2020! It was printed but the show was cancelled. I have heard rumors that they gave them away but I've never seen one and no one on GDC staff has a set. I'm in it and want to complete my set! Let's bring my card home! To me!

This, plus the fact that GDC still being this big in-person international event feels terrible in 2026. Carbon emissions? Covid? Accessibility? (Quote posts are disabled on the OP. I hope it isn't rude to comment anyway, but maybe not since I'm just agreeing.)

Slightly puzzled by C#'s ConcurrentDictionary... There are multiple overloads for AddOrUpdate, but the most convenient one still has me doing this: myDictionary.AddOrUpdate(myKey, myValue, (key, val) => myValue); Why isn't there an overload which does this without the useless third parameter?!
