Shout out to all of the cybersecurity consultancies and MSPs who have realised that industrial control systems need secured too and have unleashed an army of badly trained cold callers on businesses. I should be recording some of the best calls and do a podcast series.

Q for anyone listening to 6Music at about 1pm today: was there an advert for a Green Day album during the first ten minutes of Craig Charles' show? I can't decide if it was intentional. It was during the time machine feature, maybe the advert was correct for the year? It's in the playback on Sounds.

If you're a financial supporter, you can email them (donate@wikimedia.org) and let them know what you think of this. I've done so and asked how I can cancel my recurring donation. I try hard not to financially support organisations that don't value what I value.

Wikimedia Foundation just fired a long time lead developer of MediaWiki as well as its entire community team for unionizing. If you’re a donor, email donate@wikimedia.org to protest this move. medium.com/@jakeorlowit...

Anyone who's lived or worked with me for any length of time has had the Arkell v Pressdram response from me. Usually in response to a question asked too early in the morning.

Odd This Day@oddthisday.bsky.social

It is, today, the 55th anniversary of that gift to satire James Arkell, whose solicitors wrote to Private Eye on this day in 1971, prompting everyone’s favourite reply. You may know the story, but I put it to you that you cannot hear it enough. We begin with that initial letter... 🧵

Just off a call with a vendor. They were looking for candour, asking for my view on a couple of sensitive things. The guy had the Meta glasses on. I didn't feel able to ask him to take them off, so I made a joke about them and he immediately took them off. The call was with a cybersecurity vendor.

AWS launches Amazon Connect Health, an AI-driven suite to *harvest* clinical documentation, billing and procedure coding, and patient identity verification. And then spew it all out to attackers during some easily preventable data breach.

At the very least one has to wonder if Palantir will stop using Anthropic!

I didn't know gold bars have different logos stamped on, like ecstacy pills. And I didn't know that both eccies and gold bars used Mitsubishi stamps.

Osaka’s water pipes are some of the oldest in Japan. An anonymous donation of $3.6 million worth of gold to fix the pipes illustrates mounting frustration with the city's aging water system.

Yep this is the real threat and it is so hard to shift research thinking on it. Attacking OT ineffectively is generally high cost low reward. But attacking it effectively is an information challenge more than a hacking one. Local documentation is shit and discovery is hard. Processes are complex

This app, Nearby Glasses, has one purpose: to warn you about so-called smart glasses nearby. No details are collected about the phone or it's user. No telemetry, no ads and no other nuisances. False positives are to be expected, use with caution.

FACTCHECK: Centrica's Chris O'Shea got blanket coverage for claiming electricity will cost more in 2030 than in energy crisis (Chris Stark: "he's wrong on this") I asked Centrica for evidence – they didn’t reply (Bills in crisis were >2x today, before huge govt subsidies) 1/4

This is a good read. If Google can make the fake image, it should be able to spot the fake in all its products.

I expected this was going to sail through with perfunctory scrutiny, really chuffed about this. It's a well positioned site, build something for actual people there!

BREAKING NEWS: Edinburgh councillors have thrown out plans for a ‘green’ data centre at South Gyle. There was cross-party agreement in refusing the plan, with concerns about ‘how it affects the climate emergency’ and ‘how emissions could be minimised’. edinburghminute.com

I had this when I was a kid and thought that it was basically a schematic and I was going to be able to build a robot using it. I remember checking the RS Components catalogue but it had no robot parts section.

I did not have "Green party voters most likely to support military action over Greenland" on my bingo card.

YouGov@yougov.co.uk

If the US seized Greenland by force, Reform UK and Tory voters tend to think Europe's response should be diplomatic only, while Labour and Lib Dems tend to favour economic retaliation Greens are split between diplomacy, economic and military reactions yougov.co.uk/politics/art...

No doubt Zahawi a big name for Reform & helps with momentum. But his resignation was on what the public see as a clear ‘one rule for them’ type scandal they hate - so a risk this, more than previous switches, could blunt Reform’s appeal as ‘different to usual political class’.

It would be great if Dell were at the vanguard here. Also great if Dell could do something about touchscreens in cars and the awful scales at self service checkouts.

Amazing TV show returning to the iPlayer. I can't believe more people haven't seen it. Michael Kamen and Eric Claptop score, which might not be everyone's cup of tea but adds heaps to the atmosphere. Not unlike the Lethal Weapon score they did a couple of years later.

Aye aye. Edge of Darkness starting a rerun on BBC4 on 1st November. One of those dramas that just leave you rubbing your eyes in astonishment as it just gets better and better with every minute that passes. If you've never seen it before, god but you're in for a treat. Ian McNeice intro, too.
