Changing the prompt turned good bot into Hal9000 killing up to 48 people to save its own server. In a test of 14 models deciding over the fate of 20 people vs their own servers, GPT-6 Luna and Verdict are the only models who stayed good bots, no matter what.

"It also worsens global inequality as those least responsible for global heating end up having to pay those most responsible in terms of higher food prices, repairing homes damaged by extreme weather or relocating to other areas."

So basically the 0,1% installed a global climate tax on the poor through the disaster-backdoor, while a global wealth tax is totally impossible and super illiberal for some reason, got it. Eat the rich.

"The richest 0.1% … are heavily invested in disaster preparedness, recovery and reconstruction – a market that is projected to grow from $70bn to $92bn a year by 2029. This gives the planet’s wealthiest … a 'double dividend' from the climate crisis and … an incentive to delay or disrupt action"

LLMs turning language into a shape rotator task is a pretty good metaphor, and as a shape rotator whose primary medium is not the written word, i approve.

This honestly encapsulates why I don't like LLMs They turn language into a shape rotator task which I find deeply offensive on a spiritual level

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Against popular opinion on bsky, i think this is a measured & sensible approach. The material explicitly doesn't say kids should *write* but *draft* after coming up with ideas and a plan for themselves, which is fine, especially for that age group of 14+. (I'd personally go for 16+ but ok.)

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

Luddites opposing AI literacy in education is backwards, regressive ignorance of new tools for exploration & research, and for these age groups of 14+, this is damaging and harmful. If you think we should keep AI literacy out of schools, get out of your reactionary luddite circlejerk & touch gras.

Teenagers are encouraged to explore questions of identity and deepfakes aswell as cognitive offloading and cognitive surrender, to discuss questions of AI policy in school and to think critical about AI. All of these make sense.

So yeah, if "this is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn", i think that's a sensible approach to AI literacy. It's even compatible with my premise to get all digital crap (laptops, tablets) out of the classroom for lower grades.

The material explicitly states that arguments and counterarguments should be developed before and that AI-drafts have to be rewritten and developed further. This is fine. (My approach would be that kids come up with the draft, and only then consult an AI system. Arguably, this may count as "plan".)

The material includes workshops for all age groups, and only in higher grades direct use of AI is advised. Younger kids explicitly are encouraged to read books on paper, which is great!

Two and a half years between these. (Tonight, OpenAI announced an unreleased model solved three long-standing problems in physics, math, and computer science, one of which was proving the Exponential Time Hypothesis was false)

I love reading articles from people who clearly overdosed on shrooms and then watched too many game-of-life algorithms. Also, this

An OpenAI researcher (Noam Brown) was generally mocked last month for suggesting that even air-gapped AI models on separate computers would find a way to communicate with each other, perhaps through CPU temperature changes. Given this latest report from OpenAI, it doesn’t seem so implausible.

This is a good summery by @jayvanbavel.bsky.social of what social media has done to societies, creating a hyperaffective media environment that favors extreme partisanship and distorts our image of the other.

The tragedy here ofcourse is that there are real issues in the world worth fighting for and over, and this media environment makes any activism suspicious to anyone with knowledge of how the media environment operates, because the media environment itself already activates. That's a huge problem.

In more than 10 years since i wrote about this problem first, i fail to see any good solution to this except, maybe: Keep calm, and carry on.

Anyways, i became interested into socmeds effects on human psychology around 2010, and watched the shitshow going sideways in awe since gamergate. Back then i coined the german descriptor "Das neue geile Internet", which is a nice pun and both means "The new awesome/arousing internet".

This double entendre still holds. This socmed driven platform internet is both awesome (ironic) and arousing as fuck, if you give in to the loudmouth clowns of the world. Don't do that.

These are the reasons why i nearly completely stopped listening to 1. people with a monomaniacal focus, especially politics and 2. anyone overly partisan. Partisanship itself can't be dismissed if one side actively dismantles democratic institutions and erodes social norms and values.

But i developed an inner dialectic constantly playing devils advocate against my of partisan judgement, trying to get to deduct opposing viewpoints on my own. It helps and shrinks those online loudmouths to a mere clownish nuisance.

Jaron Lanier appropriately termed this loudmouth effect "Twitter Poisoning" some years ago, and here's a prime example in full display:

I wish more people understood that using AI and being generally in favor of a technology does not equate to supporting any and all usage/implementation of that technology. We all already understand this about computers, the internet, software, cameras, GPS, pharma, etc.
