"Like the abundance of cars littering streets, the smartphone addiction is invisible until you notice it, and then you see it everywhere. It was when I finally saw it that I started looking at my own phone with some disgust." - Breaking my smartphone addiction and returning to "old" tech.

fiets.ukBreaking my smartphone addictionWhen I was finally hit by how endemic phone use has become, I needed to do something about my own addiction. Here's how I reduced my phone screen time for the better.

All well and good telling people to keep a reserve of supplies, but it's a cost many may not be able to bear, water storage takes a lot of space, weight - and what about cooking and heating in the case of power/gas disruption? Things get complicated very quickly www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

theguardian.comEvery Briton should stockpile water and food supplies, government advisesBe Ready campaign aims to prepare UK for impact of climate crisis, technological dependency and threats by hostile state

If you're telling people to stockpile three days' worth of food, you should probably tell people to at least keep a camping stove handy. Should we be investing in a propane heater to keep a room warm during cold winters? Oh, but that's more cost and storage space, making this non-viable for many.

Better resilience from government is actually the answer - more rooftop solar with battery and islanding installed so homes and business can continue running if the Grid goes down; strategically located water storage and collection stations; non-car dependent transport for fuel/electric rationing.

Took the old bike for a trip to town. Where the majority of my rides are now on a 20" e-bike, my experience today was: - Why is this thing not going? - I need to turn - come on steering! - Was I always this slow? - I'm not climbing this hill very quickly. - How do these gears work again?

Defo odd swapping bikes. First times on the e-bike was a learning curve in handling, gears. Now it's the other way around; going back to the old bike, I start off wobbling about all over the place. Nice once going though. I love e-assist, but I do miss the lightness + silence of the regular bike

There's obviously a whole chain of issues that need sorting to tackle the clone/ghost plates issues, but allowing #OpSnap submissions for plates with clear illegal coatings, spacings, fonts etc. would be an easy first step for the latter part - very easy to spot www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

theguardian.comNumber of cloned number plates on UK roads at record high, data showsMore than 11,400 drivers last year were fined for offences they did not recognise as RAC says system needs reform

It would be wonderful if our local representatives would actually take this on board rather than stick to culture wars and motor-first thinking. For the best part of a decade we've had valuable routes planned - not even a comprehensive network, just a starting point - but they've not been built.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

How is this "shocking"? Anyone who's bothered to look already knows this. Anyone who uses a cycle/dashcam knows this. I spend a lot of time working at the roadside and barely a shift goes by when I don't see a clear mobile phone offence.

19000 offences in two weeks at just two locations. Lawbreaking by drivers is just endemic. Every one of those offences should be prosecuted. And buy lots more of those cameras. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Well that wasn't a good start to the week. Bike fell over off its kickstand and the camera didn't like it much. That supplied stand is the one big downside of my Tern e-bike, holding it far too upright. Any drive-side load (pannier) makes it too easy to topple.

Of course, the argument back might be to load the pannier on the kickstand side - but it's a folding bike and doing so would interfere with the fold; I don't want to be removing the pannier bag each time I stow the bike, hence its on the drive side.

Illegal E-MOTORBIKES - Why is that so difficult?

We’re disrupting the stolen phone trade at every level. With hundreds of arrests and seizures of phones, cash, weapons and illegal e-bikes, we’re determined to keep up the pressure and drive these numbers down further.

I love this. Travel by bike. Save money.

📢Today Google has added motor fuel prices to the maps app so you can see how expensive driving is. 🚲Not wanting to be left out we have been around the city to check on the cost of fuelling a cycle and produced our own map. 🎉It's good news - fuelling a cycle is still free everywhere.

Urbanist Philomena Cunk. In America, they invented a clever system called sprawl. It’s a brilliant idea where they put the place you sleep exactly twenty-five miles away from the place they keep the bread.

Getting fed-up with iCloud Photos, specifically on MacOS which constantly gives a "cannot sync; no space" error, despite having GBs available on the system drive; even relocating the library to an external drive with yet more space. Stupid big-tech rubbish. May scrap it and solely use Immich.

The only real benefit I find of Apple iCloud Photos is search, which to me seems better than Immich (where I have to know "where" I am searching e.g., "context, filename, description, folder, OCR" and even then doesn't always get results). If they could get that sorted, I'd be happy.

Paddling (canoeing) across Windermere today, into the teeth of a pretty stiff Force 3 wind - lumpy, and just this side of whitecaps - I came across a swimming squirrel, looking very stressed. Not a planned swim, I'm guessing. It was 300m to either shore, so I'm not sure s/he was going to be okay.

I just saw a post from some guy saying that traditional music is “over” because AI music will provide “infinite personalised songs”. I want music that reflects the misshapen thoughts of another human being, not the output of an algorithmic average.

A massive sense of schadenfreude if they do fold. How many times have I, and many others, fed back to all those organisations promoting it that it's a terrible idea and they should instead spend their resources educating people on how to find their freely available lat-long coordinates instead?

Just Stop Oil protesters were demonised for causing traffic disruption with the accusation, "what if an ambulance trying to get to an emergency was stopped as a result?" Yet here we have the far right actually directly blocking ambulances and... crickets.

Now, remind me - what were people (perhaps even some of this rabble) saying when Just Stop Oil did their protests? Something about... let me think... blocking ambulances, was it? Why aren't the police hauling this pathetic lot away for obstructing the highway?

paulusthewoodgnome@paulusthewoodgnome.bsky.social

The absolute state of these clowns. Daniel "Tommo" Thomas's rabble of retards, blocking ambulances in Gosport because they're "complicit in the invasion of this country". 🫩

All those driverists blocking the road and slowing me down. Don't they know I've got places to be? Why can't they all pull over for faster moving bicycles? 😜 (Tongue firmly in cheek - extremely busy today for some reason)

It's #WorldCarFreeDay today? I missed that - I guess other people missed the "free" part of it since traffic was much higher than normal this morning - on a nice, sunny, and warm morning too.

Cry more, Mr Entitled So-and-So. This selfishness is a major and increasing problem. The car is not the solution to transporting kids a mile and a half. What's the betting he also sits idling while dropping off and picking up, casually poisoning his kids and everyone around.

“I think I shouldn’t have to pay a charge for parking on this clearly signposted private road because I’m doing the school run” isn’t the slam-dunk legal argument you think it is, Mr Loud Shirt In A Built-Up Area.

Took the e-bike on a 32km/20mi leisure ride - focusing on Eco mode with bursts of higher levels when needed for bigger hills, and the strong winds. Already had 22km on this charge before starting and finished the ride with 9-22km left. Very successful - and *definitely* still a workout!

Took the old, regular hybrid bike out for a couple of miles earlier, just so it knows it's not been entirely forgotten about now I have an e-bike. My goodness that thing is unresponsive and slow! Brakes could certainly do with a tune-up. And opposite shifting confused me again (derailleur vs hub)

Trying to work out costs for running my e-bike, for fun. Assuming maths is right: - If charging constant at 164w for stated 3.5hrs for full charge, at 22.12p/kWh = 12.7p - Full assist = 50km/30mi range = 0.26p/km; 0.43p/mile! - Cheaper still at lower assist level. Try getting that from an EV car!

Working out the same for a petrol car. Assume 50mpg or 17.6km/litre, 255.7L covers 4,500km. Current average price for fuel ranges from 159.7p to 194.9p, so my annual commuting mileage would cost in the region of £360 - £500. I haven't even started on VED, MOT, servicing etc. Cars are expensive!

Yes, I know the e-bike can't do every journey a car does; not the point. It's clear the e-bike choice gives me significant savings for regular local journeys just on mileage alone. And for me, the e-bike choice avoided adding a second car to the household, so savings are far greater still.

That means my planned 4,500km per year (assuming I use the same bike for every commute) will cost a massive... £11.70. Glad I decided to get the bike and not a small car for my new commute!

Change the way we travel? Then mandate that councils MUST rapidly roll-out safe, connected, direct cycle infrastructure everywhere (+fund them). It takes 15-20 mins by e-bike to travel across town, but direct uses a 40mph road with guaranteed close passes and only a narrow footpath for active travel

theguardian.comAndy Burnham: UK must fully commit to reaching net zero by 2050Exclusive: PM, who is facing pressure over whether to approve North Sea oil and gasfields, makes strongest comments yet on issue

Completely agree with all of this. On narrow streets during the school run I see ridiculous oversized vehicles blocking everyone's way, drivers bumping kerbs to get through, U-turns over pavements and verges, wrong-way driving to get to a junction, phone use... chaos.

theguardian.comDriving that’s too fast, too dangerous and utterly lawless: why do we tolerate this petro-masculinity? | George MonbiotIn towns and in the countryside, I see 4x4s and pick up trucks driven without care or conscience. It’s a Magafication of transport, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The data is automatically calculated from OpenStreetMap by analysing the use of 2.2m squares and there may be some inaccuracies - e.g., in this area, cycling space is shared not dedicated; buses use the same roads as drivers - but it's a good approximation.

Battery is all-but flat, giving me about 50km/31mi range on highest assist level. A little short of the advertised 34 miles, but I deliberately added in some hills and am not the lightest cargo! Happy with that! Will easily cover my commuting needs for a couple of days and most longer rides too.

That's just rude - doesn't the weather know it's New Bike Day? I've just finished getting my new e-bike together and now it decides to rain! I did want to test it before tomorrow's commute - not sure using a ride to work is the best time for testing something new.

Bother - one slight issue, my pannier bag which I only bought a few weeks ago but is now used and scuffed, does not fit the rack - the tubing is too thick for the clips. Need to rethink that.

Went out anyway, in what I thought was a gap in the rain - not really. Got wet, but it works and it's fun! Ten miles done and not too tired!
