Nothing I have to say about this man would pass mods and there is no French Revolution emoji, so I will just spit on the ground and keep moving. IYKYK.

Joel Kaplan is out at Meta, in another signal that Silicon Valley is getting ready to court the Democrats, HARD. Don’t believe their crocodile tears. No rehabilitation for the engineers of technofascism.

We are at drag brunch. Woman next to us is paying tips to the queens using $1 bills from her kid’s swear jar and celebrating her divorce.

To all the young people talking about getting their backs blown out: I had a terrible muscle spasm at the gym today and don’t understand the appeal.

Not really sure where a bunch of liberals got the idea that they can’t win without throwing trans people in the garbage, but they’re stupid and cruel and wrong. If you want a human sacrifice so damned bad put gavin newsom in the wicker man

Dear academics, can we abolish conferences and invest in smaller, regional colloquiums and workshops? We can use all the money saved to invest in so many critical causes/orgs related to our collective scholarship. I think we can act with more direct action and urgency.

(1/2) The new Apple Watch always on recording feature is creepy as fuck. I wasn’t privy to its development when I worked there, but I did spend enough time working with Privacy Legal and Privacy Engineering to suspect that someone(s) *very* senior must have leaned on them hard to ship this.

(3/2; sorry!) From the PoV of WA law, buying Apple’s argument requires two big leaps of legal faith. Either buying that this isn’t a recording. Or thinking that beeps and hand gestures constitute an announcement that even an idiot could understand (see State v. Ptah).

(4/2) Sad to see a once tasteful company sticking ads everywhere, converting long-free apps into subscriptions (e.g., Keynote), and now tossing privacy out the window.

(2/2) Apple claims that recording to the Secure Enclave isn’t recording. Even if it’s a transient recording, it’s still a recording— by technical necessity. Assuming they’re using modern ASR, they can’t just be feeding forward audio, because transformers need to look backward and forward to work.

Replying to @snowdaylearninglab.org

But learning isn’t just information accumulation. It’s social and cultural. It’s identity work and community membership. It’s building relationships with ideas and gaining access to domain specific practices. Stop building educational tools and systems on outdated theories of cognition. 2/2

Very much agree with Pieris's argument: investing public funds exclusively in research 'applications' (believing that they have greater and more immediate economic value) will destroy the real driver of economic growth: basic science is the *only* economic engine arxiv.org/abs/2608.00172

In part 2 of this podcast, Priyanka Parekh, @benshapi.ro, and I talk about the key ideas and findings in our JLS article "Reconfiguring Science through Caring Human Inquiry and Design with Pets." Relational caring can add to rather than detract from science learning!

I've been on review panels. Can you imagine what the NIH and NSF could do with another $1.5B right now? There's so much good science that's going unfunded.

I just always get a kick out of credential-obsessed politicos who disdain the people and places that confer them. But, yes, faculty lounge is like a lava lamp at this point. We've only seen them in movies, David.

We have always gone to the theatre to watch the powerful fail. The yellow freaks we call Minions refuse the tragedy. They open the curtain and show us the ugly underbelly we secretly crave. They ask for nothing but a master. They say, "Tell me who to work for." And we, God help us, we cheer.

Simply banning kids from social media, rather than enforcing sensible age-gating on certain sites and encouraging safer places for kids to go (a la Club Penguin, Habbo Hotel, NeoPets, etc.), is such a disservice to kids and gives a false sense of security to parents. Don’t ban, make spaces.
