The single most important thing for you to know before you cast your ballot in California is that Sonja Shaw, running for the nonpartisan Superintendent of Public Instruction office, is a MAGA-aligned Moms for Liberty transphobic piece of shit. Thank you for your time.

I am finally managing to watch The West Wing after bouncing off it for a quarter century, I think because I can now just treat it like fanciful historical fiction. Like Casablanca. Or Hamilton. Or Oh Mary.

Oh we’re still using weed laws to harass Black people? In twenty fucking twenty six?

This looks to be the ultimate selective prosecution. Feds have been taking a pass on cases involving marijuana distribution businesses, which are still, to most peoples’ surprise, mostly technically illegal under federal law. And they also indicted her daughter www.cnn.com/2026/10/22/p...

Westlaw: good news! We're going to upgrade you to our AI tools FOR FREE ... unless you opt out. Reader I could not hit that "opt out" button fast enough.

It was never extreme for trans people to want to be treated like human beings in whatever spaces we entered. It did not go too far, and no amount of historical revisionism will make the simple request for equal access to safety in public spaces unreasonable.

I just do not know how to make chile verde that is not hot enough to melt your eyeballs. Sorry family. (It's so good.)

Think about how little your representatives have said or done to defend their colleague Ilhan Omar. Now try to imagine how little they will do when it's our turn.

The two issues that tend to set me apart from the people I mostly agree with about politics is that I am opposed to both legalized gambling and assisted suicide.

Had to give my young voter a crash course in how to vote in California elections when you don't understand the propositions. Here is what I told her, as a pro-tax fairly progressive lawyer who also makes a living arguing about poorly worded initiative measures: 1. If you truly can't decide vote no.

It's a terrible way to make law; we just need it because our governor is a chud who vetoes stuff. 2. If Howard Jarvis Association is for it, you are against it, and vice versa. 3. California Nurses Association and CTA are pretty good endorsements but not infallible.

4. If the proposed law makes it harder to raise taxes, fuck no. 5. If the proposed law limits the way organizations can spend their funds, look further. These can go either way, and in general unrestricted funds are better unless they all go to cops. 6. Making new crimes: call me, let's talk.

I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

Planned Parenthood says it's "only a one-time revenue boost at a time when California needs ongoing funding to recover from the impact of the federal One Big Beautiful Bill” and like, yes, you're saying we should... ask Trump nicely to reverse his bill? www.sfchronicle.com/politics/joe...

sfchronicle.comWhy Planned Parenthood is going all in against the California billionaire taxPart of Planned Parenthood’s opposition against California’s billionaire tax stems from how the measure came together behind the scenes.

Katie Porter standing over the body of a guy dying of a heart attack: "look, a bypass is only a one-time solution. We need to talk about diet, exercise, and long-term solutions to the underlying problem"

They call it a "one-time" solution, even though it provides five years of funding, because they want you NOT to understand that this is a response to an event that happened when Trump passed HR 1. This is fucking triage. There's a hole in the body, you stop the bleeding first.

Katie fucking Porter wrote an op-ed about how it is isn't Medicare for all, and only "perpetuates the status quo." YEAH that's FUCKING RIGHT, it allows people to still get healthcare? For the state to pay medical providers? For hospitals not to close? THAT status quo? archive.li/gUp3l#select...

Doris Matsui is really squandering thirty years of goodwill to win a race the ugly way the first time she's challenged. What a way to burn a legacy.

Old people telling college students how they should have protested in 2025-2026, after so many of their institutions brutalized and expelled them for Gaza protests? Do shut the fuck up. The kids didn't build this.

Keep seeing that I have a text message and think it's one of my kids BUT NO IT'S JAMES FUCKING TALARICO asking me for five dollars. (Nobody texts me except my children and Democrats. And only one of those groups asks me for money.)

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

sorry i get fired up about this but like once a month the "why doesn't everyone become [trade]" conversation picks up despite very few of you actually knowing what it feels like to be one (also i would love if someone who actually knows what it's like to work like that wrote about it.)

The ugliness of our local congressional race is the most unnecessary expenditure of peace of mind and political energy I have ever seen in my life. It did not need to be this way and I just so disgusted by the way it has played out.

Things Gavin Newsom has vetoed this week: -A ban on secretly recording people with smart glasses -A ban on ICE agents working for the state government -A ban on websites selling your data -A bill giving native tribes more say over water rights -A bill protecting transgender healthcare providers

I started college in 1986. Campus rape was all anyone talked about. I think I felt like it was a new conversation then? But probably it wasn't.

I Never Called it Rape, the big Ms. report on acquaintance/date rape, came out in 1988, but it was reporting on things people had already been talking about for at least a few years. None of this is new and none of it is changing.

Sometimes I'm walking the neighborhood and I see someone walking their dog and I say hi and the person says hi and I'm like MIND your BUSINESS, JENNIFER, I was TALKING to the DOG.

I mostly think cis people need to stay out of this but I am just going to say it: I am immensely grateful to @erininthemorning.com for her coverage over the past couple of years. Maybe it seemed like scare tactics to adults, I can't speak to that, but it was different for trans kids.

SO MANY TRANS KIDS abruptly lost access to care since 2025. They lost rights and a lot of times the first person to sound the alarm was Erin. We needed to be scared because we needed to plan. And she also reported on every victory.

You have no idea how many underground parent networks relied on her coverage to know what was coming and where they could go for next steps. It never felt like fear mongering, it felt like leadership.

Friends we have to stop blaming AI proliferation on young folks. It's not a generational issue. Sure, there are kids using ChatGPT to do their homework, but there are just as many older people using it to summarize email or run their lives. PLENTY of kids are appalled by AI art and advertising.

Also if you ask GenZ, the real AI lovers are boomers. Also I am taking an in-person theater class and it is the oldest person in the class who is constantly pulling out his phone to read us an AI summary of something. Also lots of GenX-owned businesses are advertising with AI slop.

Also my own kids have been complaining about their teachers using AI to generate classroom materials for at least two years now.

I feel like the "white Gen X is maga" talk is at least ten years late but we are waaaaay overdue for the "white Gen X is annoying" discussion. (I am white and Gen X but there are at least four high profile influencers whom I can't block fast enough.)
