Great day today: picked up a few new-to-my-yard species at the Native Plant Society plant sale, won a gift certificate to my local native nursery, saw some friends, spotted another toad in the yard, and saw my first pipevine in the wild! Here’s hoping the law of averages doesn’t ruin my day tomorrow

this graduation speech moment is notable, and her amazed shock at having failed to read the room feels instructive. when you're inside the bubble, you think everybody else is. but everybody isn't.

Seems like a “water is wet” story, but good to quantify the benefits in terms that can be used for policy-making

Pollinators have economic and health benefits, but those benefits have been difficult to quantify. A new study puts some numbers to how important pollinators are for both nutrition and income. n.pr/4cTrlzH

This is why I’m boycotting the FIFA World Cup this year. It’s all about the fans for me, and so very many have been shut out by ticket prices, safety risks, and transportation cost. What a waste of what looked, on paper, pre-Trump II, to be the most accessible tournament yet

I’m old enough to remember when Spot the Difference was not just a mechanism to determine whether the FBI used AI to rip off the Beastie Boys. Here’s hoping they sue and win.

An analysis by NPR suggests that frames from an iconic music video were used to generate content for a tweet by the FBI director. n.pr/4epM0wt

Here’s how the AI Boom, such as it is, has impacted my life: it has been used as an excuse to lay off my friends for bot equivalents that never came. It has made mass culture and art immeasurably worse. I have a stalker with AI psychosis. So, no, I don’t more data centers. I want less of all that.

Big news! This American Toad deemed my recently re-wilded backyard a suitable habitat! I started this project a few years ago, and this is the first amphibian we’ve spotted. It’s an exciting validation, and gives me hope that nature can heal with just a little care. #NativePlants #rewilding #toad

Any reasonable person can see how dumb this is, right? We’re gonna burn down the only hospitable planet so one doesn’t have to use one’s brain to decide which overpriced coffee to order?

More Perfect Union@moreperfectunion.bsky.social

Starbucks is partnering with ChatGPT. The coffee giant has launched an app within the OpenAI chatbot that is supposed to "provide inspiration for customers’ drink orders." Consumers will still need to complete their orders on the Starbucks app or website.

Put yourself in shoes of someone in a oil & gas importing country Its triage: which hospitals get fuel, which industries shut, which crops get fertilizers? Those who don't have deep pockets in a bidding war pay in increased hunger, lost wages and shrinking economies. tinyurl.com/PolycrisisWesleyan

Been listening to a lot of left-leaning US podcasts this week & it's amazing how little they care abt the impact this is having on the world. Lots of discussion about gas prices in the US & how it'll affect the midterms but zero reflection on the global economy or how poor countries will be crushed.

NEW US electricity data ⚡️🇺🇸 In March, renewables produced more than a third of US electricity for the first time ever, even overtaking gas generation! Wind and solar combined reached over a quarter (26%) for the first time.

The next tipping point in the energy transition is approaching. Overall, solar has already been cheaper than fossil power for a while, but upfront costs used to be higher. That's no longer the case. Solar is now competitive upfront AND has vastly lower operating costs (no fuel).

Unlike the 1970s oil crises, there are now better alternatives: 🔌 EVs + renewables + heat pumps could cut fossil fuel imports by 70% 🚗 EVs alone: $600bn/year in savings Every country has the potential to be energy independent with electrotech. 🔗ember-energy.org/lat...

A viral dog rescue from 2016 is now immortalized with a statue in Kazakhstan. When a dog fell into the Sayran reservoir, bystanders formed a human chain to pull him to safety. The statue is a reminder of the value of unity, solidarity and collective action. 14/10 for all

By tying his voter suppression bill to the TSA funding, Trump is saying we’ll have long lines and TSA folks won’t get paid unless Republicans strip the ability to vote from millions of Americans. It’s not voter ID. It’s voter suppression.

Right now, unfolding around us on a global scale, is a rich and unambiguous lesson on the dangers of fossil fuel dependence. The most obvious solution is for the affected countries to reduce their dependence through clean energy. Are you seeing that message in media?

Surprise! The Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post is against my 5% billionaire wealth tax. I wonder why? If enacted, Bezos would owe $12 billion in taxes, and an average family of 4 would receive a $12,000 direct payment. Poor Jeff would be left with just $224 billion to survive.
