I like to use the Dublin Fire Brigade analogy. Imagine you knew the ages of the DFB board of management, who was due to retire:die next, the political balance in the board was AND you were worried that the next appointee might be the heir of a whale oil company or a dude who doesn’t believe in fire.

In a functioning system, judges should be completely interchangeable. The fact that SCOTUS members have personal political opinions that influence their decisions is kind of a disaster.

In RFK’s defence, he absolutely hates science so maybe he meant this as a compliment?

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

I like Zendaya but it feels like there are only five or six wokring actors these days. Zendaya's in four movies this year. Three of them also have Robert Pattinson.

Every Film Now@everyfilmnow.bsky.social

Zendaya will star in a new untitled sci-fi film from A24, written and directed by Alex Garland. Plot details remain under wraps, with production set to begin in 2027. (via Deadline) #Zendaya #AlexGarland #A24

Videogames is the creative field where creatives are least recognised, most of the time their names are hidden away on the finished product. This is obviously deliberate on the industry's part but the audience enables it when they fail to care about the people who make this stuff.

sorry i need to publicly be a hater for a second but what do you mean the giant 230k+ signature save mass effect petition is only about the IP and not the devs that were laid off

I know a lot is said about Google becoming unusable due to AI but it's been very helpful here. According to Gemini, I should lie on my left side, try to take water in small sips and petition my local Counselor that our community needs a Data Centre

Booked tickets for You Can See Everything, which happens to be on the same day I'm seeing The History of Concrete. It's going to be like Barbenheimer for slightly odd people.

Can't believe they're doing Avengers-style advance sales for a three-hour documentary. Can't believe some of the screenings are already sold out.

Why has everyone forgotten the Bush era?

You couldn't make the West Wing today as the idea of a moral, ethical and intelligent President would be laughed at.

When The West Wing was on TV, the biggest complaint was that it whitewashed the presidency. The fan response was generally, "We just want to imagine a world where the president wasn't the dumbest, cruellest person on earth." This was a very common thing at the time!

"Did you make that safety poster?" "Sure did, comrade. Real fuckin sizzling with sexual tension, just like you asked." "What?"

We don’t buy Barry’s tea because it’s Fine Gael tea (and Peter Barry pushed my mother in 1988)

My dad always refused to buy us the Guinness book of records because he hated the politics of the McWherters. I don't know if they're still involved in it but I refuse to buy it for my grandkids for the same reason.

I lived in Spain in the mid00s. Had a big Invasion of the Body Snatchers moment when I realised that everyone in the village, including the sweet old retired people, were regular coke users. Been weird watching that culture spread across Ireland in recent years.

One other person who found the situation upsetting was a young Essex lad who took lots of other drugs. He used to grimace when someone mentioned cocaine and say, “It’s just posh speed, innit?”

posts like this really highlight how this account's gimmick couldn't work on any other site

Caligula was just insane, not necessarily evil Nero is right there, but you take the crazy guy that declared war on Poseidon 🙄 (and surrendered!) Also there were a LOT of horrible people. Stalin, Mengele, Mao, Göring, Genghis Khan, or more recent what about Epstein?

TVs are so much better these days. When you watched a movie on an old TV, you could barely see the picture.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

This wasn't a Children's Film Foundation film, but it had the vibe that made me hate CFF when I was a kid. I used to groan so loudly at this logo.

Tom Ewing@tomewing.bsky.social

The first film I can remember seeing there was SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS which is definitely boring enough to fit the bill but I’m pretty sure I remember it because it was unusually dull. Best matinee film = one of the Harryhausen Sinbads with the skellingtons

"The Children's Film Foundation presents... posh kids doing something boring on a low budget" That might be unfair, but it's how I felt when I was 8 and hoping for cartoons.

it's hard to describe to young folks how cool airbnb was when it first launched. just weirdos and spare rooms for like twenty bucks. we stayed at a guy's house in oregon who was a "bear safety expert" and when we asked him what to do if a bear attacked you he replied, completely seriously "i dunno."

Caroline Haskins@carolinehaskins.bsky.social

Airbnb is banning its hosts from making guests do things like “stripping the bed, taking trash offsite, or washing and putting away dishes.” The hosts....are not taking it well: www.wired.com/story/airbnb...

The ad probably needed a bit of finesse before release, though. The ad-makers should have taken a moment to ask, "How would the world's most annoying people interpret this?"

I'm hopefully taking a six-month work sabbatical to write a book about Pulp! But only if I can hit my goal on Kickstarter. So, please consider backing, or even better share with people who love Pulp as much as I do.
