If I remember correctly, this meme originated about 10 years ago, with the Gramsci via Žižek quote perhaps a bit earlier. It seems increasingly relevant for academia, if not the entire state of the world. Hopefully soon we will learn how to slay these monsters...

Thanks for all the kind words! If you're interested in the kind of research mentioned in the blog, I wrote a book this year about procedural generation, game design and making things that make things. I talk a lot about culture, community and people, too: www.bloomsbury.com/uk/next-leve...

"What are we even trying to do here?" Is what I have been asking many people in academia more widely lately. It is long past time for us, across *all* fields, to rethink the faux-meritocracy of numerical metrics (# of papers, citations, etc). We really should decide and reward what we truly value.

I've written an essay on how I think the mathematics profession should adapt to highly capable AI systems. It's hosted here on "Proofs and Prompts": proofsandprompts.com/2026/09/14/a... though you should also feel free to complain/comment on my website here: daniellitt.com/blog/2026/9/...

Last week I attended the Mathematical Approaches to Spatial Biology symposium at Durham University, where I had the pleasure of presenting a poster summarising my work. I also wanted to thank the generous organisers, @blindmath.bsky.social , Denis Patterson, Giulia Laura Celora and Valeria Giunta.

We need to stop personifying and then blaming the AI. It's a terribly complicated machine, but still a machine. Making it some sort of super-organism is simply the tech bros flattering themselves.

And as an inverse to that, as I go on and so much of my job becomes primarily about nurturing talent in others rather than doing my own research, I am now just more inclined to try and look for potential in work and ideas rather than flaws; that's what I do now, that's my primary function.

I don't just want to list papers. I want to understand how people have thought about the problem and how this has evolved as our knowledge has increased. This helps situate my work into the larger arc of research. It almost always hints at interesting questions I hadn't thought of. 3/

1. A bit of evolutionary biology. I'm really intrigued by a new perspective piece from Steve Frank that explores connections between how natural selection creates systems that generalize and recent work in machine learning about the surprising capabilities of massively overparameterized systems.

It's just obvious that there is no good reason, at all, for the government to legislate what toilets you can go into. This is a thing that civil society was quite capable of working out. We're here because the GCs found civil society didn't share their rabid obsessive hatred so they played the refs.

Beyond that it's just the normal slow generational work of living together in a multi cultural society. Being willing to learn from and about each other and get along, presuming good will and letting each others quirks be while gaining the cultural and economic and interpersonal fruits of diversity.

I haven't encountered this too much (that I can tell!) but it's also more than zero, and I have a similar reaction to Rose here. As she says... it's just very bizarre to do a philosophy degree if you don't actually want to think and work through ideas. What... what are you doing here?

Rose Schmits@roseschmits.bsky.social

The fact that I could have genuine friends I knew only through plain text (no one had profile pics or avatars yet) felt like some kind of utopian dream at the time when I was an awkward kid irl. I think that dynamic is still one of the things that draws me to text-based social media over video/pics.
