To help researchers with the new ARC Research Points system I made a simple spreadsheet calculator for 'what-if' scenarios - looking at various roles, across schemes, across NCGP period (2027 - 2029). “I didn’t know you were a “real” professor” When I heard this as a newly appointed Professor, I thought it was a sign of the place & its age … but this study shows that the same refrain, the same instruments of devaluation continue, no matter what the age.

As a PhD student designing my first survey, I added what I thought was a throwaway question at the end. To my surprise, thousands of academics answered it! The paper is out today: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...

Too many people are calling on the community to "change how we value papers". Not enough people are posting "this is what we look for in our next hiring round".

One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.

One of the challenges of being a senior woman in academia is that our models for leadership are usually male & frequently achieve their goals by making rude demands. If women try that, it really doesn't go well for us. So a lot more emotional load is involved in formulating every request.

Public perception about the future of mathematics is an enormous challenge facing our community. We are currently not even remotely in control of the narrative. For example, the photo shows what’s on display in every newsagents and supermarket in the UK. Will future students be scared away? #MathSky
