Somewhere away from "We'll just win elections and make the big platforms behave!" and "All that matters is winning so we should just use whatever platform gets us the most eyes!" there has to be a recognition that Meta/TikTok/YouTube/X are permanent thumbs on the scale until we crush them.

Irish radio ads be like: Child: Daddy, what's bollux? Daddy: What's bollux?! Child: Yes, mammy said "It's all bollux" Daddy: Oh! You mean "bollocks"! It's all bollocks how many sellers use this same damn pattern because some advertiser told them cute sells.

My latest @nbcnews.com investigation dropped this morning -- We analyzed the YouTube watch histories of 11 students to look into how some students end up viewing over 5,000 YouTube videos in class, on school-issued laptops, in a single school year www.nbcnews.com/specials/hoo...

nbcnews.comHow YouTube junk is infiltrating classroomsSchools wanted educational videos. Students got clickbait. A first-of-its-kind analysis reveals how students are drawn into a platform that keeps them scrolling during class.

At work everyone is getting tied up in knots tip-toeing around the minefield of AI agent workflows, trying to avoid accidentally triggering some process that has Consequences. This is no way to live.

This painting by the artist Adriaen Coorte, made in 1699, shows a simple bunch of dramatically lit asparagus, on a stone shelf. Still life paintings of food, often called Vanitas, were a common theme in Dutch art in the 17th century and alluded to moral themes such as the brevity of life.

A neighbour tapped me up to join the local bowls club, explaining that for home league matches they take it in turns to make the sandwiches. "We obviously don't ask the single guys."

AI-coders gonna code. We've largely handed coding over to Claude. Pre-Claude the unzipped product weighed 59.1Mb & had 24 DB tables. Months later it weighs 80.8Mb, with 32 DB tables. One week later & current beta (entirely the work of founder's agents), bumps that to 84.4Mb and counting...

Sally Rooney's books will no longer be distributed by Faber & Faber due to her support for Palestine Action. This is absurd, and part of a broader ludicrousness in British society where solidarity with Palestine is punished in increasingly nonsensical ways, while genocide goes unpunished.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

Ireland suffered a negative terms of trade shock because of the effect of war on energy prices, making Ireland as a whole poorer. Unavoidable, the question being where the burden falls. With tomorrow's strikes, public sector workers assert "not on us". We are not all in this together...

It's legitimate for the EU, the UK, Canada and others to support their Ukrainian ally. If Musk is going to (in effect) assist Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine's allies should sanction Starlink, X and Tesla. At the very least, governments (and people) should stop using his fucking site already.

Many Starlink terminals in Ukraine are financed by Poland. Its Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has put Elon Musk on notice regarding the evolving situation.

This is quite extraordinary. I don't think I have heard a more coherent, articulate and accurate deconstruction & demolition of Nigel Farage's ReformUK, Tory & Restore policy than this. In under 85 seconds! @rafaelbehr.bsky.social is on here folks and worth a follow.

Different groups apply what pressure they may to shirk costs. Teachers & public sector workers are heavily unionised. Fuel protestors employ force. The govt prioritises those on TD-level wages for tax measures, spreads other reliefs thinly. Pain suffered maps onto power structures.

If we want to regulate AI, why not start with a simple law forcing LLMs to use "Meesa" instead of "I"? Easy to build, easy to verify and deflates a hype while still allowing people to use chatbots (so no one can claim we are limiting anything)

Working from a café while car is in the garage, and there's a mother-and-baby morning of sorts. Tuning out the specifics, but for 40 mins it has just been one woman's voice prattling on and on, the odd raised inflexion of a question, then resuming after 3 about secs, and onwards...

Smoke alarm went off because teenage daughter, minutes before heading off on a school trip, shoved the hair dryer on full hot-blast into one of her washed-and-not-yet-dry favourite trainers, then wandered off to finish her packing.

The "zionism is racism" motion that has just passed on the Green Party's conference floor is truly gross, and deeply racist. The party's MPs deserve some credit for opposing it, though they should've done so more stridently and sooner. This is now a millstone around the party's necks. Deservedly.
