Giving up smoking? Here's how I did it: Most cigarettes are "habit" (you have them at set times or stuations), ~10% are "addiction" (you need the nicotine). Start by cutting out "habit" cigs, 1 or 2 each day, over about 3wks. So, dont smoke at every tea break, or when you get to the lights etc. 1/2

Zack pretending he doesn't know 18-21yr olds minimum wage is lower than 22+yr olds, that Labour Manifesto pledges to remove the difference over 5yrs, & that Labour raised 18-21yr old wages by more than for 22+yr olds in the 1st 2 budgets to bring them closer, & will give both 3.9% this time.

Zack Polanski@zackpolanski.bsky.social

Labour now briefing young people won't get the same minimum wage uplift. Even Starmer didn't break this pledge. Workers rights mean same rights, pay & conditions, same rate for the same job. What does this Labour government have against young people? inews.co.uk/news/politic...

There really needs to be something we (& the EU) can do about this behaviour... #Russia

A sister-ship to a previous cable/pipe-sabotage vessel is creeping back and forth across gas pipelines and power cables connecting UK to mainland Europe.

Lets hope the (said to be 2000-6000) starving civilian residents of Oleshky will be permitted to leave & cross the river to Ukraine insted of being used tby RUssia as human shields in a modern genocide...

1/ Russian soldiers in the occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky may be going hungry along with the civilian population. Russian warbloggers are blaming the unpopular and apparently corrupt head of Russia's Unmanned Systems Forces, Yuri 'Toilet' Vaganov, for the situation. ⬇️

Look, this isn't rocket science. Make a Law saying "Every Electric vehicle must use the same charger connection (not via adapter), & be capable of sending power either way; every charging unit must be bi-directional; paid chargers must also refund cards" www.theguardian.com/environment/...

theguardian.comUK looking to give carmakers incentives to turn EVs into ‘power plants on wheels’V2G tech enables drivers to charge automatically when electricity is cheaper and then sell some back to the grid at times of high demand

If you did this, every paid charger would have to charge the same as domestic chargers to avoid losing money, & every EV would be cheaper as they'd all use the same unit. Formula One do it. Don't allow EVs to be different.

Banks can afford an increase in the ‘windfall tax’ aka bank levy - they say so privately. But why are we still talking about this - we pay them 4% interest on their deposits, their cash piles, built of our deposits….then charge a 3% levy on their profits…..profits we boost by ~£30 Billion a year.

This is just dreadful stuff from Kuenssberg: "What has the government done to cut the national debt?" ONS: "Public sector net debt was provisionally estimated at 94.0% of GDP, 0.7 percentage points lower than a year earlier"

When I was growing up, *nobody* spat in the street - something I find totally unacceptable, unnecessary & disgusting - & that was due to a post WW1 edict issuing a fine for it, to restrict transmission of Tuberculosis (now rising again...) Every lampost had a fine notice affixed.

Bryan Smith #RejoinEU@bpsmithuk.bsky.social

The article is a bit "bla-bla-bla", but what it boils down to is "yes". If you have fines for unacceptable behaviour, people do take notice. Those complaining about the behaviour are empowered, & can phone British Transport Police (who will sort it out) www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

if one of the weekend supps doesn't do a '10 recipes to make with all the tins you've just stockpiled, preferably on a camping stove that's been in the loft for ten years and doesn't really work' then frankly what are the food pages for

Excellent points - hot summers affect gas, coal & nuclear power stations more than dark winters affect solar & wind power. The answer is a good mix of all, *with battery storage* (which can be low-tech, such as pumping water back up into hydropower reservoirs when power is excess to needs).

There's a different side of this story that nobody's talking about.

Pensioner poverty has halved in the past 30 years, as the shadow work and pensions secretary Helen Whately claimed. But how much of this was down to the Conservatives? Almost all the fall she’s talking about happened under Labour.

We put up an interactive graph re: X conversations re: the (discovered to be fake) Wedgewood polls. Several "rigged election" narratives are emerging around this case. We're working on an analysis, but making this graph available for folks who want to explore faculty.washington.edu/kstarbi/Spot...

Kate Starbird@katestarbird.bsky.social

Worth watching this emerging story: Wedgewood Polls alleged to be fake; has been picked up & amplified/integrated by established sources & other pollsters; may be tied to prediction market trading; is likely to throw doubt upon current poll numbers (which will feed "rigged election" rumors later).

The "unsaid part" being that its not "chicken livers, feet & other parts we dont eat" that will be fed to salmon, like tasty tidbits (as #C4News suggested the other night while reporting)... It will be guts, lungs, heads & feathers, ground up & used as "protein supplement". Fine if you're a fox🙄

Dale Vince@dalevince.com

Salmon industry plans to feed chicken to salmon, did you know? We’ve been here before. Some decades ago, we fed cows to cows, look where that got us… www.thetimes.com/uk/environme...

15 people had their honours stripped from them in 2026... I seem to remember this was something very unusual, 20 or 30 years ago. Maybe - just maybe - we need a bit more scrutiny & care* in how they are handed out? *Not just for "poor " or "brown" people... many of those in disgrace are "posh"

Dale Vince@dalevince.com

Seems only right. This should be extended to cover tax avoidance by exile, people like Jim Ratcliffe, why should people who leave our country to avoid paying tax, keep their honours, its a dishonourable thing to do. www.ruck.co.uk/rugby-news/k...

Check again. The Jackdaw gas field will supply 1.6%-3% of total projected UK gas demand (or up to 6% of peak domestic gas production) over its 11yr lifespan, producing 10billion cubic metres of gas—enough energy to heat around 1.4 million homes - that would otherwise come by ship...

Caroline Lucas@carolinelucas.bsky.social

Government support for drilling at #Jackdaw takes a wrecking ball to any pretence of UK climate leadership & pours fuel on an overheating world - and for what? It’s equivalent to just 2 months of UK gas demand, creates just 27 direct jobs & has *no* impact on energy bills🧵1/4

Actually, Zack's wrong. The Jackdaw gas field will supply 1.6%-3% of total projected UK gas demand (or up to 6% of peak domestic gas production) over its 11yr lifespan, producing 10billion cubic metres of gas—enough energy to heat around 1.4 million homes - that would otherwise come by ship.

Zack Polanski@zackpolanski.bsky.social

Won’t lower energy bills. Won’t boost energy security And creates just 27 jobs. Compared to all the benefits of investing in renewables and insulating our homes. www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/zac...

Jackdaw is a tiny field that was already licensed by a previous government, and it's been allowed to go ahead. It really won't make much of a difference either way.

This is damning. So much could could have been done at the time, with what was known about COVID, and with what what resources we had. It’s hard not to read callous neglect into these findings. And that intentional neglect was layered with lies - like the “protective ring” - which did not exist.

Kit Yates@kityates.bsky.social

The Inquiry’s overarching judgement is that fragmented responsibility, ignored warnings, poor data and inadequate planning created conditions in which Covid could spread “like wildfire”. Social care’s neglect was longstanding. During the pandemic, its consequences became catastrophic.

43,000 old people died in the Care Homes Matt ancock lied about "protecting"... In fact, he *insisted on* (not merely "authorised") the release of NHS patients into Care Homes without testing them first or any requirement for isolation or quarantine. #LetTheBodiesPileHigh, chuckled Boris Johnson.

Tumble weed across legacy media about ITV's exposé of Reform. Can you imagine the hysteria if an SNP councillor advocated for concentration camps or a Muslim Labour candidate said he wants to shoot MPs he considers traitors? The Mail front pages, Telegraph thinkpieces, and somber Today interviews?

Only a Russian, or someone employed by Russia, would hold this political position. To even *suggest* that the victim of invasion can't be allowed to negotiate its own terms (even of surrender) is ridiculous.

NOELREPORTS@noelreports.com

Trump said “it is time for someone else to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine.” In other remarks, he said Russia had “generally behaved reasonably” toward Ukraine and that “they did nothing special.” Trump also said he does not want to disrupt negotiations with Putin over the war. #Ukraine

Britain's lunatic fringe (Far Right & Far Left) have been trying all Summer to generate riots across the UK, using every excuse they could think of. None of it worked. Even putting hooded militia on the streets didn't work. Britain is never going to riot in the Winter, its too cold & wet here.
