Sad to report that most Democrats haven't just turned their backs on student debtors, they're actively making the system even more predatory. Read this piece by my comrade Braxton Brewington and then join @debtcollective.bsky.social. Without mass action debtors are going to continue to be crushed.

This is a stepping stone to relegating higher education to a select class of wealthy white folks by the way.

It's happening 🚨 House GOP representatives are about to introduce a bill that would completely eliminate subsidized student loans. They are trying to make it impossible to go to college unless you can afford to pay for it upfront.

For context, the Department of Education functions as the 5th largest bank in the nation—and the largest debt collector. Imagine if Bank of America were to transfer their entire loan portfolio to JP Morgan. The data/privacy concerns here are massive, let alone legality.

The U.S. Education Department is handing off a portion of its student loan portfolio to the Treasury Department, a first step toward shedding management of all student loans as Trump administration officials dismantle the federal education agency.

Earlier this year, the Student Loan Ombudsman for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) wrote her annual report on student loans. It was deeply critical of Trump admin policies. So they fired her. Well, we just hired her.

Cannot emphasize enough that Teen Vogue has had stellar reporting, analysis and political commentary over the past several years. This is a huge loss for the media sphere and all of their youth (and former youth) readers.

I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day. certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

New POLITICO report: Trump admin is “exploring options to sell parts of the government’s $1.6T student loan portfolio to the private market.” We're announcing our willingness to purchase the portfolio for its market value. We will then subsequently cancel the debt. www.politico.com/news/2025/10...

Begging y’all to not use this as an excuse to feel sympathy for municipal police departments. There’s enough space to have two enemies at once, I promise.

If you owe back rent debt to Equity Residential or *any* corporate landlord in the country, you can now go to backrentdebt.org and begin a debt-dispute process. We just created a new, free, first-of-its-kind tool to help tenants and debtors fight back.

Debt Collective 🟥@debtcollective.bsky.social

Just Now: A group former tenants who all owe crushing amounts of rent debt —from $200 to over $50,000—just announced themselves on debt-strike. They will refuse to pay their unjust debts to Equity Residential, the 5th largest corporate landlord in the United States.

Keep your eye on this. A decade ago, Debt Collective launched a student debt strike. Mainstream media scoffed and laughed. Then billions got canceled. We’re repeating that playbook with back rent debt: strike, shift moral culpability, target bad actors, change consumer protection law for the better.

Vox@vox.com

A small group of former Equity Residential tenants is launching a first-of-its-kind back rent debt strike that will go public in early October. The campaign's broader strategy is to challenge what organizers see as systematic abuse of renters.

We’d be in a much stronger position right now if mainstream Democrats had taken a common sense stand for First Amendment principles instead of piling on undergraduate standing up for Palestine.

Horrifying.

Thousands of X users have posted about Ali Nasrati, a 30 yr old IT tech for Walmart, claiming he made insensitive comments abt Charlie Kirk. But Nasrati has never posted about Kirk. Now, he's been suspended from work and forced into hiding. I wrote about people being falsely targeted by the right

Rage donations to abortion funds have waned, leading to the emergence of a new horrific phenomenon that reproductive justice organizers and debt-abolitionists are calling "Abortion Debt." In a new academic article for South Atlantic Quarterly, I write about its origins — and pathways to resistance.

I'm doing a few things here: 1. Explain abortion debt + ground it in racialized/gendered historical context. 2. Situate 'abortion debt' in a longer lineage of neoliberalism expanding its territory by financializing social reproduction + using (mostly) women's bodies as sites of expropriation.

We spoke to U.S. Catholic Magazine about debt injustice: [Debt Collective] points out that relief is "literally in the Lord’s prayer." It’s the ultra-rich who are culpable, [they] say— billionaires hoarding wealth, against biblical teaching. They're committing sins.” uscatholic.org/articles/202...

News: With the Los Angeles Tenant Union, we're organizing a historic strike against the 5th largest corporate landlord in the United States — and the largest in L.A. Today, dozens of tenants across two Los Angeles buildings are refusing to pay their utility bills to Equity Residential.

Replying to @ddayen.bsky.social

"In a nutshell, this bill says that only the wealthy few can attend college, and that working class students will receive no help from the federal government to learn or pursue a career," Braxton Brewington of @debtcollective.bsky.social says in a statement.

NYT Daily with Chris Rufo on today to just spew right-wing ideology for all its listeners and all Barbaro offers up is the occasional "hmm." I would prefer if the Daily simply renamed themselves to "Heritage (Un)Spoken" or "AEI or DEI" or "The Right Take" or whatever they come up with.

Braxton Brewington, press secretary for the Debt Collective, said the administration’s measures were “a reminder that despite the Supreme Court ruling, there are powers at the Biden administration’s disposal and they use them — but sparingly.” www.nytimes.com/2024/01/19/u...
