working on a font converter that takes any font and outputs a Game Boy Advance Butano-compatible header

people ask what I listen to and I have to answer like I dont listen to Tiny Little Lip Balm on repeat like some kind of weirdo

In my cyclical moods and motivations, I'm back to working on a GBA game no one but me will play. This past week I got: - A large overworld with no screen-scroll - Animation system - Projectiles - Sound effects - A new look - Branching dialog system & memory (you can permanently piss-off an NPC!)

Also, when im in a simpering, weak, pathetic, crybully competition and my opponent is a driver

while I am anti-LLM, I did get lost training my own to test a hyper-specific focus. I also now see how hard the optimization problems are TLDR: this shit doesn't scale that is inherent to the discovery that bigger = better, and attention being quadratic complexity with few optimizations

LLMs _will_ crash and burn economically all that will be left is the discovery of attention optimizations in ML, which is interesting, but also shows how dumb and inefficient these models really are and how attention tricked us into thinking the models know what we're saying

I offerred a coworker one of my 3D printers - which had been sitting idle for 5y - for his son, like a year ago, and I forgot about it since then. He asked me about it again today... so anyway, I'm 6 hours deep in fixing it, replacing cables, a driver from spares, and a missing motor...

During this I have lost a belt bearing, so I need to wait for that, and it'll be cutting it close because he'll be in town Wednesday

Well. It happened. Its a cold day in hell. Its projected to snow 3-5 inches in coastal South Carolina, and its starting now.

Wolfenstein has the opportunity to do the funniest thing by releasing a game with a new, modern enemy

I swear to god some of these corporate news outlets would open a window right now and say “We can’t confirm it, but it appears that the ground is allegedly being snowed upon.”

I am halfway through my 6-part series on building a puzzle game with it. I choose Klotski (sliding rectangular block puzzle), which has its pros/cons Pros: Simple mechanics 1 entity type Simple rectangle collision Cons: All the characters are straight

As much as I love touching hardware and registers, I have enjoyed using Butano, the asset-abstraction framework for GBA, for the last 2 years. I want other people to enjoy it too

The tracker album for GBA stuff is working, but I am hunting a bug and adding support for Game Boy tracker music in addition to the Game Boy Advance tracker music. This should allow you to use both Pulses, the Wavetable, and the Noise that GB/C supports

I am on my 6th detour though as the GBA asset-management library, Butano, can seemingly be ported to SDL to be compile Butano GBA games for any system... the long term goal for 2026 is to port Butano to SDL so that your Butano GBA games can be played on PC, Switch, etc without an emulator

work-related annoyances aside: I'm trying to work up the courage to tell my boss - who hired me at my first dev job and later hired me again at my current dev job years later - that I appreciate everything he's done for me

I had no FTE experience, I was staying with a friend because I couldn't afford rent, I had untreated medical issues, a crippling drug addiction, and my car had recently been totalled around that time. I was not far off from giving up emotionally and physically

He hired me at my first dev job anyway, understood when I had medical issues, and liked me enough to ask me to work with him again years later. I quit my job immediately to go work with him again. I don't know if it's going to be awkward to say, but I'd follow him anywhere after all that.

am I crazy or do people at work treat me like ChatGPT? 19 of the 20 things he brought up were on his end, and all he did was send me copies and screenshots of the errors that were entirely on his end

detour mini project: creating a modern foot pedal adapter cable for the NES/SNES Miracle Piano Teaching System (crappy foam original left, modern right)
