Mark Carney, when asked just now what has changed in US trade talks over past week: "To the extent any progress has been made, it's because the US is coming closer to our position."

(Bloomberg) -- Prime Minister Mark Carney is expediting regulatory approval for a new, high-capacity oil pipeline to expand Canada’s access to Asian markets, with the aim of starting construction in September 2027.

The pipeline will be operated by a new company jointly owned by the Canadian and Alberta governments, along with Pembina Pipeline Corp. holding an initial 10% stake with an option to increase that to 20%. A further 10% ownership, at minimum, will be offered for purchase to Indigenous groups.

I....don't know what prompted this from the president today, but StatCan reported JUST this morning that in the past year, Canada experienced its slowest population growth since 1916. The country's population is essentially stalled right now.

Carney, when asked just now about Trump’s upcoming visit with Chinese President Xi: “The United States has far deeper cooperation today in some of the most important strategic technologies on the planet with China than Canada does. That's an observation.”

In 2024, the US imported ~12 million metric tons of potassic fertilizers from Canada (hillnotes.ca/2025/06/05/p...) Specialized ships can carry ~60k metric tons, tho container ships <half that (www.sasktoday.ca/central/loca...) So we'd need at least 200 ships loaded from [checks notes] Belarus

Trump: "The United States is working on a massive Deal with respect to the purchase of Potash from Belarus. The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

With half the votes in, it looks very likely Carney’s Liberals will gain another Conservative seat. This one became vacant after Carney appointed Richard Martel to the Senate. CPC getting crushed, a distant third place.

The Liberals are expected to win the other two byelections tonight (both Liberal holds), so we’re likely looking at a net gain of one seat. And a demonstration that Carney’s brand remains very strong in Quebec.

Trump may be just trolling Canada with stuff like this, but it has the very real effect of hardening public opinion and making it politically impossible for Carney to give further concessions in trade talks

This wasn't specified in the statement last night, but Canada did add new counter-tariffs on the US to replace the fish and seafood tariffs it removed. The new 50% tariffs will hit copper wire, wood charcoal, and a handful of other items such as plaster tiles and printed photos.

Canada’s new counter-tariffs would hit hardest firms shipping products from Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan and California, according to a preliminary analysis of the data by Bloomberg News.

Industry Minister Melanie Joly says Canada's new tariffs are aimed at "products that will target states in the U.S.", and are "strategic to put political pressure" on those states

(Bloomberg) -- Prime Minister Mark Carney matched dollar-for-dollar the new tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump over the weekend and announced support programs for Canadian businesses hurt by the escalating trade war.

The latest commentary from the President of the United States. (I'll add a Bloomberg factcheck: Canada's unemployment rate hit a two-year low of 6.4% in July, and GDP has been rebounding above expectations in the second quarter)

A reporter reads out Trump's post to Doug Ford, asks for his reaction. "I'm not going to take the bait," Ford says, then immediately adds: "This guy's a loser...I have more courage and more brains in my baby toe than he has in his whole body."

For once Trump is actually using a roughly accurate figure for the goods trade deficit between Canada and the US, but wrongly attributes it to farm products. The deficit is due to the US buying Canadian oil.
