After far too many AI-generated final projects, and my own uncertainty about what students really need to know about NLP these days, I decided to overhaul my Text as Data class so that it's structured around a single project: training up a C19 LLM from scratch. Here we go! github.com/laurenfklein...

okay SO it took a hot minute but I have screened many of the sources recommended in response to this (thank you all!) and added more from my various bookmarks. I now have an instructor-oriented ✨annotated bibliography✨ about generative AI, especially LLMs, and their impact on cognition and writing.
Oooh boy. This is a great opportunity to talk about datasets and what goes into constructing a small one much less a "well structured historical dataset" in some fields. I'm a digital historian of Renaissance and Early Modern Italy and *none* of my material is digitized (1/13)

I am wrapping up an asynchronous online grad course in Digital Studies this summer and I am having the best time. I’ve gotten some really cool stuff from these students! Quick thread on a few things I have done differently for this course in case people are prepping and looking for ideas.

I don't think people fully understand yet just how fragile university-hosted digital resources are after external funding ends (especially if the lead academic retires or moves or is made redundant).
Does anyone know what's happened to the Irish Legislation Database? When I go to www.qub.ac.uk/ild/ I get a not found message and a search isn't yielding anything.
