No pressure at all, but if you'd like to get me a gift, I'd really like some money I could use for fun things/luxury items. I've been out of a job and living on pretty thin income for a while and I miss treats

The book ends with all the remaining contestants being faced with rooms that simulate their worst fears. The "villain" is forced to relive a plane crash he survived. He taps out but the "heroes" leave him in there because he almost hurt them once. We're supposed to like them after this
thinking about how star trek is 100% not my thing: magic the gathering....................
thinking about my elves pauper deck i play every monday: Magic The Gatherin'
i know commander is THE magic format right now. but it feels pretty telling that in the debut video for new UB Set is saying over and over again "cant wait to see how people build this as their commander!"
I know theres been a lot of posts about "how ai is ruining next fest" and all that. And while I do agree there is.... so much ai slop on next fests lately. I do want to say that I think *steam itself* has had a hand in ruining next fest/
so yeah AI is making next fest kind of miserable but i think Valve noticed that this gets a LOT of eyes on games and because the number most go up and its popular, well, let's do one every 3 months!

demos weren't always a thing on steam and next fest is relatively new. In the few years that next fest has been around it went from a once or twice a year thing to basically every quarter. Aside from AI slop pushers this is encouraging devs to put out demos before theyre ready and at a crazy pace.
a thing i notice a lot from *indie* indie, small itch devs is "i will put out a free demo and if it gets attention i'll make the full game" and i think thats what we see a lot of here on next fest. i think most of these demos won't ever be finished.
I played an otome game and as I was rotating my favorite love interest in my head, I realized that more than romancing him, I wanted to be him.
So.... hi! I'm going by Vaughn online, he/him! If you know me in person you can also call me Zach :)

@bugbearstew.bsky.social and I are about 80% done with the MrBeast book now and the level of awful it's on is staggering. I didn't know a big four publisher book could be this bad
Been wanting to do more altering magic cards but I have such a hard time deciding what to paint. So, with suggestions from some folks on here, I furry'd llanowar elves! Become squirrel.
been thinking a lot about "essential" pieces of art. the kind of stuff you should really know about if you're interested in a medium. and im curious what people think of as "The Essential Video Games"?
been really enjoying the responses to this post and also spoke a lot about it with meg a lot too. its really interesting and compelling to think about the sort of "canon" i guess of video games.
thinking about this kind of thing is also kind of humbling and terrifying. theres SO many games. Theres so many video games that its kind of scary thinking about how you could never ever play all of them. wild
Undertale. It dramatically rethinks traditional genre tropes and relationships, while offering players of most skill levels the ability to craft a likely unique playthrough based on their choices, actions, and preconceptions. I'm aware of the inspirations like Moon, but Undertale is a perfect storm.
The game that comes to mind is Trespasser because I'm a sicko, but I will instead offer up the game that executed on Trespasser's main ideas successfully: Half-Life

So what is an "essential" video game you think someone who is seriously interested in the medium's history should play? *Not* necessarily your favorite, but one you think is a pillar of the medium.
