One other fun thing related to this is that we had tickets to see Cowboy Junkies at Wolf Trap back in the early aughts. And then Dar Williams ended up being the opener. It was one of the best concerts we've been to.

I feel like others probably have music they were introduced to by someone that was fleeting in their lives. Mine was Dar Williams (Mortal City) by Sarah, first year of college. I have no idea what happened to her, but I still listen to it often (now it is mommy music and iasked for by my kids).

Trains have many doors, unlike planes.

I'm pretty sure they were short staffed at the station and this is one reason amtrak should choose a boarding method that is less insanely labor intensive

This 2022 piece by Jeremy Peters In the New York Times was hilarious bullshit when it was published but now that Musk is literally bankrolling the entire Republican Party it’s a fucking laugh riot.

We *finally* watched "The Sheep Detectives" and it was pretty great. Took me a bit to get used to the CG but the movie reminded me a lot of a slightly older style of family movie mixed with some more modern comedy sensibilities.

Since Alexandria and Arlington's libraries made different decisions about whether to be closed or not today, I figured I'd look at the VA law. And, I think I didn't know this, learned that today is "Columbus Day and Yorktown Victory Day" in Virginia (§ 2.2-3300).

Nerds Gummy Clusters are by far the best candy introduced in the 2020s and among the best new candy of the 2000s, if not the best and further back.

At the moment, it was probably a re-release of Snow White when I was 5-ish and the Evil Queen was trying to push the boulder. More lasting, maybe seeing Batman (1989) at a drive-in in rural Virginia and then driving home at night as a kid. Felt very uneasy the whole ride.

Sleepy Hollow Reviews 🎃🐎@sleepingvillage.bsky.social

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

Season 9 had some fine episodes, also some poor ones, but all of them had the hallmarks of the coming collapse (as did the latter production half of season 8). I weirdly recall actively disliking this one when first broadcast. I've softened a bit on it since.

On This Day in Simpsons History@dailysimpsons.bsky.social

29 years ago today, Homer Simpson had this exchange with a Khlav Kalash vendor. On September 21, 1997, #TheSimpsons episode “The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson” first aired on Fox.

Two recent AI food posters in restaurant windows that make me less likely to frequent them. At least the Chinese food one isn't too yellow-tinged.

The other day I was picking up Pizza from Pomodoro Pizza in Bethany Beach. The grandmother that runs it was very proud and pointed at the TV showing her grandson playing in the DE vs MD game in the Mid-Atlantic little League world series game

for a junk drawer to legally qualify as a real junk drawer, what is the ONE absolute mandatory item it must include? a mysterious key that does not unlock any thing

This is a possibility but honestly I think the correct solution is to use the James Bond name and get a director that's very good at making quick, good, and low budget action movies done. And make a ton, like the original novels. Oceans 11 but Bond, maybe.

pixelatedboat aka “mr bluesky”@pixelatedboat.bsky.social

Expectations for the next Bond are much too high and it’s impossible to please everyone. Here’s the solution: don’t cast the role. Shoot the entire movie from a first-person perspective, allowing the viewer to imagine that they themselves are James Bond

I'm not sure I have any receipts of how Humble Bundles used to do it, but this feels very, very low to the charity and the actual source of what they're selling than when they started... very sad.

Also the sliders are on a different scale? The sliders are at the same spot but Humble gets $4 more than the provider or the charity, since they have that secret gray area? That sort of dark pattern is enough to make me never want to buy any thing from them again, sadly. @humblebundle.com

Maaaaybe support this if it's only based on the box art only.

the most realistic scene in Jurassic Park is when two scientists make a questionable decision — traveling to an undisclosed location with a strange man — on the promise of three years of modest funding

I'm pretty sure it was Life of Brian when I was 7-ish.

Do you remember what *your* first R-rated movie was? I finally asked my mom (I couldn't remember), and she told me it was The Lost Boys when I was roughly the same age as my daughter (about 9). The movie traumatized her more than it did me, apparently

It's maybe okay to do passes that low at an air show or similar. But if it really is just "randomly" buzzing a beach that puts the beach goers at an increased risk without their consent and is bad.

LOW PASS: In videos widely shared on social media, a Blue Angels fighter jet is seen flying what appears to be just feet above onlookers at Pensacola Beach. The Navy is reviewing the incident: www.stripes.com/branches/nav...

It's incredible how different it is to drive north of Leesburg now compared to 20-30 years ago. Data centers, corporate highrises, and suburban sprawl galore. Still fun to drive past some of the OG Ashburn data centers are and where AOL's (at the time massive) data center was.

In the DC area, we had very nice ADC maps (later brought by Langenscheidt then Kappa) which had logical regions with consistency: either a county or multiple combined. I go to MA and their map books are by *town* and pages are *alphabetical* and *radically* different in scale.
