jana: so you know the thing you think of as a mushroom? that's actually just the reproductive organ of the real organism. this four-pack of sugar free redbull is basically the same thing, but for the organism that is the redbull brand 14 year old grocery store employee: it's still shoplifting, dude

To settle the big vs little endian debate once and for all, I propose Freedom endian: mid, little, big digits, repeated in a zig-zag pattern.

Remote attestation is a heavily underdiscussed threat to computing freedom. People often mistakenly dismiss it with "I will run my own fork (of the OS or browser) / Magisk", not understanding that with hardware attestation, you're literally unable to 1/

GrapheneOS@grapheneos.org

Apple and Google are gradually expanding their use of hardware-based attestation. They're convincing a growing number of services to adopt it. Google's Play Integrity API and Apple's App Attest API are very similar. Apple brought it to the web via Privacy Pass, which Google intends on doing too.

As a young biochemist I was very daunted by the complexity of metabolic pathways and felt extremely relieved that I didn't have to grasp it all properly it for my cells to be able to just get on with it. (Also now uncomfortably aware of my heart, plus my breathing, my tongue and my peristalsis.)

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

I gotta say, I’m really glad my heart never forgets to beat or loses its rhythm or whatever and it just… keeps going, all day and night, without stopping. I’m definitely not suddenly aware of my heartbeat and the seemingly arbitrary unremarked tenuousness of life. Everything is fine.

A friend of a friend (Pete Fenelon, RIP) in a compiler writing class produced a compiler with one error message: "you lied to me when you told me this was a program". I briefly adopted this approach myself before learning better the hard way. This cricket approach is genius.

Time Dilation kind of makes the whole “datacenters in space” idea more fun.

Technically… a GPS Block III CPU runs an extra ~7,000 clock cycles per day compared to the same machine on earth.

Extend to the extreme, and you get the whole subfield of CS+physics called relativistic hypercompuation.

If you're ever gonna make a federated/decentralized protocol, make an official instance, but make it go down on weekends. #ATProto
