NEW ANALYSIS: Expensive gas behind "nearly 90%" of rise in UK household electricity bills since 2020
+ 77% of the rise in gas bills
Contrary to what you've seen in media / political narratives, net-zero is "helping to shelter Britain from the impact of expensive gas", says @acjsissons.bsky.social
Meanwhile...
"the foreign secretary has approved new drilling in the Sea Lion field, which is estimated to hold 1.7 billion barrels of oil and expected to start producing from 2028."
“The Fossil Fuel Treaty is not just a plan—it’s a lifeline,” said Mayor @mayorofgm.bsky.social Burnham, joining Massive Attack to endorse the call just before a sold-out show in Manchester on #WorldEnvironmentDay2025.
This is the moment music, activism, and leadership united for climate justice.
🚨BREAKING: Jackdaw has been APPROVED Emergency demo 📍 DESNZ, SW1A 2AW🕕 7.45 AM & 12PM, 21/10
Bring your anger. Bring your friends. Bring your voice.
Climate destruction is here and yet today the UK gov have backed deathly fossil fuels.
But there's still time to #StopRosebank
Jackdaw will directly create 27 new jobs.
It will cut our dependence on gas imports by 2%.
Join us 31 October to find out how our energy system could protect workers, lower bills, and NOT send us into climate disaster. actionnetwork.org/ticketed_eve...
Workshops: www.cacctu.org.uk/conference_2...
The most important headline today on Jackdaw and Rosebank:
UN confirms 'below 1.5C' is out of reach, and the world must cut carbon emissions by nearly a fifth in the next four years, to avoid catastrophe and a high risk of triggering climate tipping points.
Jackdaw "blow to climate campaigners", "will dismay environmental campaigners"
Why do headline writers appear to think the only downside of destabilising our climate is that it will annoy 'campaigners'?
The government just approved the Jackdaw gas field.
What you need to know:
1. In 2022 it was clear than ANY new oil and gas infrastructure (globally) was NOT compatible with staying below 1.5C
2. In 2026 we are going past 1.5C and into an unknown and very dangerous climate
3. This is NOT 'pragmatic'
Workshops on 31st October include

Yesterday, we gathered on Westminster Bridge to send one clear message: end ISDS now.
ISDS is a clause in trade deals that lets corporations sue governments over policies that threaten profits – even when they protect people and the planet.
The UK must walk away from ISDS once and for all.
🚨 MANCHESTER WE’RE COMING! Join us on Saturday for the Northern Organise Together summit to debate, strategise and organise on how we stop the far right.
There will be plenty of workshops and we’ll be joined by an amazing team of speakers!

The new Climate Action Tracker update on Canada is alarming. What has shocked me the most and may come as a big surprise to many is the way in which Mark Carney has steadily dismantled Canada‘s Climate policies to the point where he’s heading towards Trump level rollbacks.

Climate Action Tracker has just published what it views as two extremely disappointing country analyses: the US (Critically insufficient), and Canada (Highly insufficient), as both governments roll back climate policies. Read our analyses here: climateactiontracker.org/press/releas...
REMINDER: If govt cuts heat-pump grants, the UK will have to import a lot more gas
In 2023, Energy UK said that'd cost an extra £3bn over 2026-2030, but gas prices today are roughly ~2x what they were at the time of the analysis…

It's worth adding that since 2020, the CCC published revised estimates of the cost of net-zero, which it now says would amount to £108bn over 25 years, or 0.2% of GDP
This is mainly due to falling costs for EVs – more here:
www.carbonbrief.org/...
It seems the original sin here was by David Turver, a retired engineer and self-described "accidental energy analyst", who made the £957bn claim in a 12 Jan article for the Spectator, previewing his 13 Jan report for rightwing thinktank the Institute of Economic Affairs
Tory maths fail when attacking net zero accidentally turns £458bn into £957bn. Oops.
But there is a more deliberate dishonesty here, where all the costs of NOT taking climate action are ignored: higher household bills, health costs and spiralling climate breakdown.
El Niño: Ten Things You Need to Know
Includes forecasts of floods & droughts, why this El Niño is a 'Godzilla', and why this is not a good time for another hit to global food security
And why the biggest problem with El Niño is that we've already superheated the land & seas by burning fossil fuels
Protest in Matlock against the Reform-led Derbyshire county council removing all references to climate change and net zero from their "Environmental Strategy".
Important article on the risk of AMOC collapse.
"The most important no-regret measure is also the only one scientists say can reduce the risk of the AMOC collapsing in the first place: cutting planet-warming emissions."

As governments from around the world gather in Nadi, Fiji to prepare for COP31, the United Kingdom is inching closer to a monumental decision on the future of fossil fuels.

This summer started with an unprecedented heatwave in late May.
It's almost October now, and last night temperatures over most of the UK were between 7C and 11C hotter than normal for the time of year.

People support clean energy but think others don't. People support clean air but think others don't. People support low traffic neighbourhoods but think others don't. And they think others don't because vested interests and right-wing media work hard to create that impression.
Interesting insights here from @cyclinguk.bsky.social. Good to see that one of their YouGov polls this year revealed that 70% of people support #SchoolStreets - but think that only 49% of others do. Also interesting to see common misperceptions around the popularity of cycle routes and speed limits.

Reform UK's funding has made headlines this year. But its ties to the UAE have largely flown under the radar. Our new report maps how an oil-rich Gulf state with no elections has built links to Farage et al, and into the wider UK far right, including Tommy Robinson. fairsq.org/petropopulis...
This extreme El Niño will bring drought, wildfires & crop losses in some regions and more intense rains & flooding in others.
El Niño is predicted to push about 50 million people into acute hunger and increase food prices. Simultaneously, global food production is being hit by high fertiliser costs
A temperature rise of 0.5C in the Pacific (above the 30 year rolling average) is the threshold for declaring an El Niño.
Above 2C is a 'super' El Niño
The 2026 temperature rise has reached 3.05C, the highest ever recorded, several months before its expected peak, which is predicted to be around 4C
At least a dozen IPCC lead authors are employed by or linked to Saudi Aramco, Saudi institutions and other oil and gas interests
The IPCC produces the scientific reports that underpin UN climate negotiations. Experts say its conflict of interest policy is ‘not fit for purpose’.
