My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

The idea of progressive and individual customization on altruistic, trans-human warriors in powered armor and space slug-throwers with a historically fascistic but re-appropriated color palette is part of a large amount of my OC art.

I feel like the design would show the "center-leftist democracy" aspect if the soldiers were allowed to add personal decorations to their armor! Sayings, flags from home or causes they support, keychains, bandanas wrapped around their heads/arms, etc. Like a dictatorship turned democracy aesthetic

Stuff I've tried from the current Next Fest thread: #EvilMoon: Unspoken, previously listed as Moon Doom but they had to change the name. It's basically religious dark fantasy Metroid Prime. Infinite ammo, respawning enemies, heavy use of a lock-on function and circle strafing things. Rosary grapple!

#TheHollowing: This one is interesting. I don't know that I've seen anyone mix flight games with horror elements before. The demo is very short but establishes pretty well what I'd imagine the full game will be. Interested to see if there are surprises ahead.

#IronHunters: Another bullet heaven with a Starcraft 2-esque visual aesthetic. Weapons have individual XP tracks with permanent stat ups, which is not something I've seen in these. Metaprogression seems strong with this one. Starting weapon good if you want to go Itano Circus on the baddies.

#Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior, based on the music and album art of the band of the same name. Nice to try another gun-based Metroidvania but disappointed to discover it has souls-style currency. There's only one boss in the demo but they were very damage-spongy. Not sure about this one.

#RENSE: FPS Roguelite that mixes together a bunch of systems I like from other games, notably Risk of Rain 2. The visuals are generic but stat number (especially lifesteal) go up a lot. Won my second run. Has promise. Recognized some of the music from another game I played, Sisyphus Paradox.
