โBasic historical literacyโ, not anti-knowledge, is something that should be insisted upon for comprehension of the national story and its enduring legacies - especially in connection to racism. This term will be very apt and useful for culture and heritage workers.
Tried something new yesterday that i think went well: establishing antiracism not as procedures but as basic historical literacy. Began STEM โEDIโ event in Edinburgh with a lecture on structural racism as a continuous thread connecting Edward Long, Eric Williams & Jason Arday.

Opinion: The Annals of Inisfallen are part of Irish history. They donโt belong in a British library

Even if Farage was not leader of that political entity, the media would still centre him and his agenda. The only way to counter his monopoliticalmegalomania is to see off the socio-economic circumstances that populist, fascists prey on and exploit - through racism and persecution. Spread the riches

If Macron, a multi-millionaire investment banker, denounced his rich mates for creating the conditions that drive people to civil unrest and criminality, then that would be a start. But no, he's never going to shit on the elite that he is part of.

Plenty of opinion pieces have been and will be written about Hegseth's depraved plans to have a man killed in front of cameras. I doubt that any will be as eloquent and distressing as Thackeray's account of his witnessing the hanging of Franรงois-Benjamin Courvoisier on 6 July 1840.

I wonder if there is a missing piece here - that in France and elsewhere monastic trophies which stayed local went into public collections, especially Paris. The equivalent books which went to Britain went to aristocratic libraries, typically entering institutional collections in GB and US later.

Excellent piece on a really important project and worth saying: manuscripts follow the same path as early print in this period in England--Ottley was overseas himself and Celotti arrived w/his own dubious books.

this (from the book referenced in the article, Portrait of an Obsession) articulates why that work is needed, I think - we've been addressing difficult histories from the pov of individual collections, but when they are systemic and fragmented, you also need to take a step back

the book that I am writing is (in part) an attempt to formulate a framework to think critically through these issues, by understanding provenance as an active, manipulatable, literary, and political force rather than just a history of ownership dates
