So many new mutuals in the past few days, time for a pinned! 🌿 Hi I'm Charline, 30+, she/they (the latter is new hi) 🍂 Neurodivergent user researcher in the games industry 📖 PhD in games (designing failure into games) 🎨 Would love to go back to making stuff ✍️ Just getting into solo TTRPGs

If I had a nickel every time I received unsollicited pitch sales on LinkedIn telling me "hey Charline, you're a researcher, isn't research incredibly boring? Here is an AI tool to do all the research for you", I'd have way too many nickels. Sir, I happen to enjoy actually doing my job, you know.

Reminder that mental illness does not make people racist. Being racist to begin with, and WEEKS of the media scapegoating black and brown people and "the immigrants" for the riots and violence in France, however, will make a racist feel like he is entitled to pulling the trigger.

It's so damn dire out there. Support your favourite indies, your dedication actually helps them unlike whatever this AAA loop is

Working in this industry is one hell of a rollercoaster - on the one hand seeing devs and artists rally behind human-made titles and the solidarity across the board and the new studios popping up, on the other, the absolutely bat-shit soul-and-industry crushing choices made up top.

Like the hope is there, I'm discovering tons of games and devs and studios I want to follow and support as a direct result of people reacting and resisting the downward spiral as best as possible, but also MAN.

I hope every climate change denier in the UK gets devoured by the mosquitos that are somehow still alive mid-October (after September and October comfortably sitting at 20 degrees celsius or higher) and chose ME as their buffet of choice.

Going through my backlog of indie games and just finished Relooted - loved the mix between puzzles (heist prep) and super satisfying parkour, and learning a bunch of things about various African countries' history. Very curious what my colleagues in archeogaming would make of this one.

Jesus Christ - this is literally not what the report says. According to the BBC's own reporting, it says: 1. people get diagnosed more because we understand the conditions better and there is less stigma 2. the estimates on neurodivergent populations are very likely out of date (see point above)

3. Their own reporting says specialist LACK THE DATA to say whether there is a risk of overdiagnosis or not. And still this is the headline. Do better, journalists.

I fear Paralives might take over my weekend and be another game making me contemplate living in a tiny house in a tiny remote village (I can't drive).

All the Pikachus and some lovely hits and the Moltres I was secretly hoping for, goodness the hit rates on this set are really good (I usually never get anything WHAT)

Can't afford a house but I can afford to open Pokemon cards with my roommate (at retail) (scalpers can eat rocks)

Just finished House of Hikmah, what a gorgeous, gorgeous game. The puzzles were so fun (that satisfying lightbulb moment never got old once), the level design and environments were magical, the voice acting was top notch, the story and the world building made me not want to leave ever.

Especially Mu'alima Fatima's library. I mean, look at this place. 10/10 would fly around the whole place again and read all the books, please. And the character designs may just be among my favourites in any games.

Games UXR is 50% "players don't read instructions" and 50% "and here is why they don't read *your* instructions specifically (they probably don't even notice them)"

The whole PlayStation ditching physical games debacle still has not convinced me to get a PS5, but it has convinced me to finally buy a dvd player (and go through my collection + the second hand ones I got this weekend).

"I feel like I'm being tortured" - my slightly dramatic playtester today after I asked them to show me how they performed an action they found particularly difficult. (And this, game devs, is why you should always test your games)

Optimist: The cup is half full Pessimist: The cup is half empty UX researcher: What makes you say that? (bonus follow up: how does that make you feel?)

Watch The Odyssey --> introduce mom to the other odyssey adaptation O'Brother --> introduce mom to video game music by having her listen to Where the Water Tastes Like Wine soundtrack pipeline completed.

Just went to see The Odyssey, I am now convinced that Nolan should have just done a remake of Troy instead, and that maybe this is what he really wanted to do deep down, considering how little depth and attention the odyssey part of the movie got in comparison to the trauma of Troy.

Matt Damon was absolutely stellar, the female characters were just what you'd expect from a Nolan movie, and the fall of Troy + return to Ithaca were as haunting and epic as the journey to get there felt very... hollow. Such a strange and uneven film with some brilliant moments and some not so much.

If I had a nickel every time I see someone on LinkedIn go "maybe this is what the next generation of AI tools needs to address" to solve simple problems like "we suck at putting all documentation in the same place so they are easy to access for everyone", I probably wouldn't be working anymore.

Are you a developer who has put a fishing minigame inside your non-fishing video game? Or are you considered a connoisseur of fishing minigames? OR do you have knowledge of how real-life fishing works and how it might translate to games? I would love to speak to you for a story please!
