I’ve officially started my lab at Monash University! 🎉 We’re diving into #cellgrowth and #lysosome biology, through the lens of molecular #structure and mechanism. I’m thrilled to say that PhD student scholarships are available—so please share widely and get in touch if you’re interested. 🤩

Happy to share my PhD work on the regulatory mechanism of E3 ligase RNF213! RNF213 is not a monomer, but a dimer that switches between inhibited and activated states in an ATP-dependent manner. We tracked the activation mechanism and showed how disease mutations can destabilize the inhibited state.

Amazing structure

New preprint! 👀RNAse activity has to be tightly regulated.✂️🧬Here, we present the dynamic architecture of the conserved Rixosome complex – a major player in ribosome maturation and heterochromatin maintenance. Our results give insights into its mode of activation.👇 #cryoEM #Ribosome #RNA

Always a rare treat when I am lucky enough to spot a tiny clown doris! One of my missions is still to get a better photo of one too 😅 🤡 The R package has been uploaded to CRAN for review! #nudibranch #rstats #dataviz 🦑🐙🧪 #marinelife #invertebrates

Well done! Congratulation Jordan! 🍾🎉

We academics live for days like these! Yesterday was the graduation of my PhD student Jordan Nicholls. A truly proud moment for me as his primary supervisor. I wish him the best in his future career. Others in the picture are to follow, some of them quite soon (already writing their theses!).

1) The Herzik lab is excited to announce our newest preprint in collaboration with the Grotjahn lab! We have developed a surfactant cocktail that seeks to overcome one of the more nefarious problems in #cryoEM, Air-water interface (AWI)-induced damage and preferred orientation (PO).

Sad news coming from our colleagues in the US. A friendly reminder to those who have missed out that we have grad school positions available and we value you! Maybe this is an opportunity to make Melbourne, Australia your new home. Please boost.

I've seen a lot of demoralized posts (and emails) from people who didn't get into grad school this cycle. This was one of the worst cycles I've ever seen due to massive cuts to research funding, financial difficulties at universities, and technological disruptions.

We’re looking for motivated students eager to help pioneer new techniques in the lab. Students interested in learning #CryoEM and protein biology, and who bring complementary backgrounds (e.g., mass spectrometry, #CRISPR /lentiviral, or fluorescence microscopy), are especially encouraged to apply.

Tried it. Its awesome. Shame the code isn't available. Webserver only, how long will it last??

I've heard this position articulated by a lot of people, but I think this is hard to make precise. Much of this tracks a problem we already know in science: standards of authorship are not stable and there are many difficult edge cases. Consider these cases...

Seeing ppl debate how to deal with paper submissions that are partly written by “AI”. Why are we having that conversation? I would refuse to review or edit any paper that was not 100% written by its authors (i.e., the people who have authorial responsibility for the creation of a papers content).

In the words of a world-renowned cardiologist, Australia’s young medical researchers are “left to flounder with total job insecurity and family pressures. It’s the best recipe we have for raiding our future, in terms of a medical research workforce and the benefits of medical research”

First steps toward magnetic-elution affinity chromatographies, easily pattern surfaces, microfluidics, also probably cheaper than mag beads for robotic pipelines. Keen to see the data!

Great news! @mariaingaramo.bsky.social 's company (Nonfiction Labs) made a remote-controlled antibody. Its binding turns on and off with a magnet. This is a HUGE step towards our dream of magnetically controlled drugs. Imagine a cancer drug that ONLY attacks the tumor, not the rest of your body.

The government can’t claim that medical research is a priority while failing to treat it as one. Nine in 10 leading researchers in Australia are missing out on government support for world‑class proposals, leaving exceptional talent uncertain about their future.
