Behind every hero, there’s a historian. Holding my UK and US author copies in my hands, yet I still can’t believe The Inn at the Foot of Mount Vengeance will be out in the world soon!! Coming July 7th 🦌🏔️♥️

🔥 Over one year since the ceasefire agreement, more than 1,400 people have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, nearly two million still need shelter, not a single hospital is fully functioning, and 1.4 million face crisis-level hunger.

"The promise of higher education is often framed in terms of opportunity. But if working-class academics feel they must leave parts of themselves at the door, inclusion remains conditional, and the system remains unchanged and perpetuates historical inequalities." 💯

Not to spoil it too much(!) but my fantasy novel is, at its core, the story of a working-class academic who gradually loses his sense of self as he strives to conform to the expectations (within and beyond his institution) imposed by elitist academic hierarchies. www.penguin.co.uk/books/468338...

penguin.co.ukThe Inn at the Foot of Mount VengeanceBEHIND EVERY HERO, THERE'S A HISTORIAN Mount Vengeance is legendary, a monumental climb with a dragon at its peak. For most, it’s an adventure, or a quest to prove themselves worthy of fame and glory....

Tough reading tbh. I am fairly certain much of this contributed to my departure from academia. I have a postdoc + book published + years of teaching behind me, yet have been unsuccessful on the job hut. The job market is what it is on top of that, of course, and

I'm struck by the 250k people using this service. I'm struck by the people who seem unbothered at the prospect of reading AI novels. Mindlessly 'creating', mindlessly consuming, no connection or substance left.

‘Sudowrite, the “best AI for novel writing”, promises to maintain your ‘unique voice’. Whether or not you have a unique voice, it will give you scene directions and alternative options for the plot, and act as your editor.’ Alfred Nunney on AI and books, from the blog. www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2026/oc...

When I go through dev or line edits, I'm also looking for little instances like this to double and triple check. Some might have been flagged/checked already, but things slip through.

Would it have been flagged later? Would I have noticed? I like to think so, but the point of this, though, is that if it had been left in the book I'd personally see it as my mistake.

This mistake was also a fun way to reflect on character/perspective. My protagonist, victim of the injury, would absolutely have carried out the incorrect procedure I mentioned. However, the character who actually carried it out was extremely adept in survival skills — so, unlikely!

In The Inn at the Foot of Mount Vengeance, there's a scene where a character gets the equivalent of a venomous bite. How I dealt with this on page – magical solution aside – was fundamentally incorrect. A friend who read an early draft of the book picked up on this before anyone else did.

Dyer's Wynd Books are an excellent online indie bookstore based in Glasgow. They have been such a champion of my debut fantasy novel and I'm v. grateful for their support. If anyone fancies picking up The Inn at the Foot of Mount Vengeance, they ship UK-wide! 🏔️🦌 🔗 below! #sff #booksky

Love Seamus Heaney as bogcore tbh

Lit Hub@literaryhub.bsky.social

You’ve heard of cottagecore, but what about bogcore? Anna North introduces you to the genre via work by Annie Proulx, Kay Chronister, Seamus Heaney and more.

It's a grave indictment of the UK govt that Faber and Rooney have had to make this stand. But good for them, I hope it adds weight to the push for change.

Outrageous for a whole host of reasons, but this jumped out at me; "By signing up to this Charter your organisation commits to [...] to widen access, inclusion and opportunity and to increase discoverability, helping more creators, from more backgrounds, reach wider audiences." How can AI do this?

Genuinely what's going on here? Do they think we'll just roll over and accept these vague, directionless promises because the word 'inclusion' is in there?

Next week!!

Edinburgh pals! I'm so looking forward to spending the evening with Robyn Pritzker and Anahit Behrooz at Waterstones on Weds 21st October 🏔️♥️ Join us at 7pm to chat all things fantasy, gothic literature and publishing: www.waterstones.com/events/an-ev...

This recipe means so much to me. It’s the recipe my best friend makes me if I’m not feeling well. It’s the meal I make most often when I have family and friends over, the meal I make when bringing food for someone. Not to get soppy over macaroni(!) but it deserves all the love. Make it!! ♥️🧀

Nigella Lawson@nigella.bsky.social

Canadian friends, I can’t help feeling that #RecipeOfTheDay would slot so well into your Thanksgiving dinner. It’s my Sweet Potato Macaroni Cheese! And it would do very nicely for the rest of us too, right now. www.nigella.com/recipes/swee...

Three cons in three weeks – an amateur number for some authors I’m sure, but I am officially done in!!! However I’m also feeling v. inspired after listening to so many author panels, chatting with booksellers and publishing folk, and meeting readers ✍️ ✨

We saw you from across the bar and we’d like to cosy your fantasy

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

Just finished listening to The Inn at the Foot of Mount Vengeance by @chiarab.bsky.social and I absolutely adored it. It's such a lovely story inspired by Scottish folklore and full of diverse characters and you don't even need a map to follow along 😊 Heartily recommended ⛰️🐉🏨

Finished Sarah A. Parker's The Ballad of Falling Dragons at the YMCA this morning. Up now in the reading queue is @chiarab.bsky.social's The Inn at the Foot of Mount Vengeance. This is 335 pages; I'm hoping to knock this out by Saturday.
