Finished Elise Kova's Prince of Swords at the YMCA this morning. Up now is Heir of Prophecy by @analeighsbrana.bsky.social. This is 432 pages. I'm hoping to knock this out by the end of Thursday.
Got my ticket! And I know "Cotton Candy" is Queen Bee's de facto theme song, but I personally prefer "Monster's Ball", so...
Who are we seeing at SpindleHorse’s first official Halloween celebration? You can grab this Beelzebub print while you’re there 👀 It’s also Hellaverse creator @vivziepop.bsky.social’s birthday! So come celebrate October 28th at the Globe Theater in LA! www.eventbrite.com/e/beelzebub-...
♫ Baby, we're up all night 'til we get enough ♫ ♫ This is the appetite of Beelzebub ♫ ♫ Closed mouths, they don't get fed, open up your jaws ♫ ♫ Until there's nothing left at the monsters' ball (Let's go now) ♫

RIP Walter Koenig. Thank you for giving us Babylon 5's Alfred Bester (and, of course, Star Trek's Pavel Chekov).

"If restoring the Centauri Republic means nothing to you, what does? What do you want?" "I'd like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike, as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price."

Nobody wants violence. It would be nice if conservatives could focus on the brewing constitutional crisis instead of pearl clutching over the leftist boogeyman of the week. Also, Republicans have been threatening civil war since we dared to elect a Black man. 🤷♂️

Still working on Elise Kova's Prince of Swords. But on the side, I've also now just knocked out a return to @rebeccayarros.bsky.social's The Empyrean novels for her most recent installment: the short story anthology Threshing Day.

"You're in a bookshop walking along the stacks when all of a sudden you look down and see a book. You reach down and flip it over. The book lies there on its back, its pages exposed. The book wants to be back on the shelf but you're not helping. Why is that?"
But also, I feel sorry for agents who went into this gig to deal with authors and now suddenly have a new job which is basically doing a Voight-Kampff test on every submission.

I rooted our Clayface in the character’s Golden Age actor origins — along with a twist not seen in previous versions, to better mesh with Burton’s tragic-comic style. We also figured in that era we’d have seen more of practical-effects version of the character, more of a phantom-of-the-opera type.

Can‘t let Clayface week end without mentioning BATMAN: RESURRECTION features our own take on the character — connecting his origin to Tim Burton’s 1989 BATMAN film. The hardcover is still in print, two years after release! Also ebook, softcover, and audio. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/750157...
Glad to get this in early; now we invoke the Tao of Max Bialystock & Leo Bloom (i.e. ♫ We can do it! ♫).

Still in a Clayface mood (or again a Shirley Walker mood). I've always liked Walker's Clayface theme. Given the Hitchcock influences on "Feat of Clay" and Ron Perlman's incarnation of Matt Hagen, it's always sounded very Bernard Herrmann-esque to me. It's appropriately old school and tragic.
"Look. A piece of clay left behind when they took Hagen's body away. Watch." "Electricity has no effect on it?" "Exactly. I wouldn't be surprised if the body they took to the morgue was only a shell."

Federal appeals court rules President Trump had no legal authority to take over California’s National Guard and send 4,000 of its troops to Los Angeles last year, with key vote by a Trump...
"What are you doing?! Stop it!" "Look at them, Hagen. Look at what you used to be." "No! Turn them off!!" "You CAN play those roles again, Hagen. Let me help you find a cure." "NO!!! HAGEN'S GONE! MAKE HIM STOP HAUNTING ME!!!" In a Clayface mood (or technically a Shirley Walker mood, heh).
I'm glad James Newton Howard's returning for Sunrise on the Reaping. His music's been one of the creative foundations of The Hunger Games films.

Funny enough, the Starbucks at my local Ralphs was handing out samples while I was doing an afternoon grocery run. I didn't know what it was or what it was for until I got home and saw this. I offer up a belated toast to my beloved snarky spirit animal of the mid-1990s.
Before I forget, here's to 20 years of Torchwood.

As much as I want to see the mystery of what caused the Cataclysm and whether Korra was unfairly blamed resolved, I'm also kinda dreading it.
