Hopefully other media organisations will now report on this finding that there was no plagiarism in Professor Arday's 2020 paper - only a correction issue in 2024 - despite a successful campaign to reopen an investigation this summer

Peter Jukes@peterjukes.bsky.social

Update from the publishers: "In August, a preliminary investigation was opened to consider concerns raised with us about the article... Following further review and in agreement with the journal’s editors, we concluded that there were no grounds for adding to the correction notice published in 2024"

Has anyone got any experience with finding a personal assistant for help with daily tasks for a few hours a week for autism and ME related issues. This is probably too specific for my relatively small audience.

First Orban, now Vučić. Both fundamentally undone by rank corruption of their regimes. Which is so often the reality of the authoritarian right in power. Really worth paying heed to in Western Europe right now

Wow. Vučić has conceded Serbian election. Massive moment for the entire Balkans

For anyone wanting to understand the significance of the Serbian election result tonight, I recommend Katya Adler's Balkans documentary available on the iPlayer. An excellent and sobering overview of the recent history and ongoing challenges in the region.

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

Vučić’s defeat could mark a geopolitical turning point for Serbia. It could also inject fresh momentum into EU enlargement across the W. Balkans, where progress has stalled for years. A Serbia firmly anchored in Europe would transform the region’s outlook and significantly weaken Russia’s influence

No one elected Elon Musk to oversee foreign policy. Yet he was able to unilaterally slow down Starlink in Ukraine — because his enormous wealth gave him enormous power. Now he’s using that enormous wealth to buy another election and amass even more power. See the problem here?

At some point, if we survive this, there will be a Dr Strangelove-style movie about how Trump and Putin almost destroyed the world because they were constantly being fed false information of impending success by terrified and cowardly underlings.

Of all the many evil betrayals I’ve seen in the last 60 years I’ve been alive, I’m struggling to think of any that match what Trump and Musk did to innocent Ukrainian citizens while Putin was sending missiles this way. A trio to live on in infamy well after I am gone

We need to stop holding public referenda on established facts and statistical data - medical diagnoses, sexual orientations, religious affiliations, etc. The only thing these surveys reveal is the ignorance of the average person, which is not under debate either.

If you're never willing to hand over any of the learning to the learners you will gradually make them passive in their thinking and turn yourself into someone who 'delivers' a curriculum and can therefore be replaced. I'm going to stick to interacting, relating and hopefully inspiring, thank you. 😉

Why on earth does this BBC piece on Burnham telling an interviewer the UK security services confirmed Russian interference in the Brexit referendum require a response from a pro Brexit pressure group? It's literally our Prime Minister telling us about election security. It's nothing to do with them.

The main lesson from Leuven is that cities don't necessarily need more road capacity to improve accessibility. Sometimes, they need to change who gets to use their streets, and for what purpose. After all, making a city easier to move through does not have to mean making it easier to drive through.🔚

Shetland Day 7: A quieter day with fewer thrushes (though still 1000+ Redwing, many Blackbird & 1 Ring Ouzel at dusk) & only Olive-backed Pipit remaining of the rarities. Still much to enjoy, including finding a late Pied Flycatcher at the top of Ward Hill, 2 Mealy Redpolls & a couple of Jack Snipe

We felt like we'd won the commissioned care lottery this morning. Two carers arrived, on time, to take my disabled teen daughter out. Only one new one! The other, she knew and liked. Unfortunately, said carer then told us it was her last day with the agency. Sad, but we've had so many leave.

I've managed to find two experienced ladies to support her doing school, a morning a week each. Self employed through direct payments. Otherwise my wife is her full time, unpaid TA. We need to train them and build up their hours, as my wife's not allowed to support her in exams, understandably.

Having already advertised the TA post on noticeboards in all the local villages, interviewed them and got the final DP budget approved with the LA, I really can't face trying to do the social care package ourselves as well. Not when I'm also working full time and trying to keep on top of life stuff

Anyway, having her happily go off with her carers at 9am meant my wife and I could go to the opticians together, rather than one at a time. We then had a coffee and cake. We got home in time to mend the sofa (don't ask) and get stuff in the loft before she arrive back at lunchtime.

Her support needs are really significant (nonspeaking autism). And she's very academic (doing 9 GCSEs). The local authority couldn't find a special school that could meet those needs, so she's with us 24/7 apart from Saturday mornings. Online school is amazing, but life is intense for us all.

I think she's had about 25 different carers in a year. We could ask for direct payments, but how do you recruit two carers to work together most Saturday mornings on minimum wage? Because the LA will happily pay an agency £30+ an hour per carer, but they'll only give us the bare minimum budget.

Shetland day 6: No question about bird of the day on Fair Isle, with rain at dawn sparking a big fall of thrushes, dominated by Redwing. All-island total around 12000 - huge groups of 500+ swirling around, also good numbers of Song T, Fieldfare & Blackb. Two YBWs and hrd only Olive-backed Pipit too.

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played
