Someone who might set an example by regulating US social media at last? We can but hope.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Half Man Half Biscuit at the Oxford O2 Academy. As always, a ridiculously thrilling show and one that again confirmed that the two hours I spend at a HMHB gig are undoubtedly the two hours where I feel the most ALIVE.

This is extraordinary. "AI labs and data brokers are paying companies for their employees’ Slack messages (including private DMs), emails, documents, and code. ... Employees almost certainly don’t know it’s happening." onlinesafety.substack.com/p/dont-forge...

“Everybody’s dead, Dave.” “Edward the Confessor’s dead?” “Everybody’s dead, Dave.” “What about Harald Hardrada?” “He’s dead, Dave. Everybody’s dead, Dave.” “Not King Harold?” “Yes, Dave. King Harold’s dead, Dave. Everybody is dead, Dave.”

Since the terrible, terrible “deal” struck by Frost and Johnson, and supported by Starmer, there has never been any official scrutiny of the agreement. It was just never considered again.

I’d like to see the PM negotiate readmission to the single market and customs union (the Norway option the Brexiteers promised us), then run a citizens assembly to decide if we should accept it. Lay out the pros and cons for everyone to see, without the lies of the Tory media. Then act on that.

There are so many things we haven’t even considered yet that could be destroyed by enemies of the state, AI, or enemies of the state with AI. I’m sure the next decade will be characterised by taking things back offline and putting them under manual control.

Just got a tremendous result from Ai. I keep a diary of all the new films I watch (at Letterboxd), with a rating. I got ChatGPT to work out from this what I tend to like/dislike, and of course what I've seen. Then I got it to recommend half a dozen well-loved 2026 releases that I've missed out on.

(contd) 4. Heart of the Beast — "your best bet for straightforward action/adventure." 5. Hoppers — "your best unseen mainstream SF bet." 6. The Marching Band — "not in English, but the critic/audience agreement is exceptional."

With all the justified negativity around Ai, this is one thing that it's great at – doing a load of online research that it'd take hours to do yourself, and which you wouldn't do because it wasn't worth the time. And then giving you something to think about, and make a judgement on yourself.

FYI it suggested: 1. The Weight — "probably the strongest match of all." 2. Night & Day — "period drama + romantic comedy, and especially relevant as you liked Sense and Sensibility." 3. The Christophers — "intelligent, accessible grown-up cinema." (more)

Playing with the ChatGPT voice interface, I accidentally left it on, with a St Etienne album playing. So it dutifully transcribed the lyrics for an hour, pausing every few minutes to try to "answer the question". There's pages of this.

Final UK gig of the final UK tour by St Etienne, after 36 years. What a class act. Balloons. Tunes. And so much love in the room.

One point off the win in the quiz tonight. We got the year of the Gunpowder Plot correct, then changed it at the last moment. NEVER OVERRULE YOUR FIRST GUESS.

ChatGPT has asked me 20+ times today if I want to advertise. I didn’t the first time. I certainly don’t now. For a product with access to every marketing lesson ever written, this is spectacularly moronic.
