Tempted to say OutKast for Atlanta but there are so many good choices.
I love how certain cities hold their most iconic musicians as patron saints and part of the city's identity. Minneapolis has Prince. We in Austin Have Willy. New Orleans has Dr. John. Genuinely curious: Who is your city's musical patron saint?
This explanation makes a lot of sense.
In MAGA, parental estrangement is a big issue — and parents are held out as blameless victims. I suspect that's one reason why Vivek Ramaswamy ran an ad celebrating Amy Acton's vile mother. And why MAGA — including Vance and Trump — are backing him. www.salon.com/2026/10/23/r...
What the headline doesn’t say is that Quincy is not getting rid of ALPRs. Instead they’re just switching vendors. The black boxes may be different but the problems with mass surveillance are still there. www.wcvb.com/article/quin...
Please share with your NC voter friends. In-person early voting is still the most reliable option for most voters.
North Carolina’s Democratic governor warns that the absentee ballot rejection rate is twice as high as in 2022 thanks to last-minute changes by Republicans. He recommends voting in person if you can (early voting is even better!) wcti12.com/news/local/g...
Quincy, MA, city council passed a non-binding resolution, 8-1, calling for the removal of Flock cameras. It now goes to the mayor (who has historically defended ALPRs). thequincysun.com/city-council...
He was so good in Office Space. RIP.
I’m so very sad to hear about the passing of the wonderfully mustachioed character actor Richard Riehle. He was a delightful guy and I had the honor and pleasure of interviewing him twice, but we were also Facebook friends and traded many messages and comments over the years.
Every time someone tells me they read or heard Malcolm Gladwell say something insightful, my eyes glaze over, and I look for the nearest exit.
“In recent years, many Americans have decided that their country’s problem was that it had too many police officers, when in fact its problem was that it had too few,” Malcolm Gladwell writes:
Literally the first words out of El Sayed's mouth are, "Yes, I disavow them." They will lie about literally anything.
This is a lie. Abdul El-Sayed clearly disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood before delivering a masterclass on the First Amendment and religious freedom - a constitutional rebuke of Tommy’s Christian nationalism. Sen. Ted Cruz is lying.
I suspect this is not going to have the effect that TikTok and Elon want.
(THR) - TikTok has banned the entire Musk film account, citing political content that violates its policies. .. raises concerns about Big Tech suppression that the very film seeks to expose.” @thr.com www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politic...
We’re working with @jonathancohn.bsky.social in Quincy to inform voters about the nine ballot initiatives in Massachusetts and to encourage voter turnout.
NEW — The No Kings movement is hosting a nationwide “Vote Early” day of action this Saturday. Instead of a mass protest in downtown Chicago, this time No Kings will set up actions in neighborhoods across the city. thetriibe.com/2026/10/no-k...
I’m no longer in academia, but I remember the pressure to professionalize by going to academic conferences. No institution should be positioning people to have to make a choice involving crossing a picket line.
My professional organization is trying to get ahead of possible strike at the hotel where our conference is scheduled to be held next week and sent an email that includes the phrase "If you do need to cross a picket line..." This is not my American Studies.
I’ve written a little about this issue, which came up when a video store clerk shared Robert Bork’s video rental history. Would love for SCOTUS judges make that connection when I comes to video privacy but not counting on it.
I'm going to listen to these here SCOTUS arguments on video privacy because I *deeply* want the plaintiff suing Paramount to win. He's probably *not* going to win, of course... but I don't *know* that yet.
Absolutely correct. Do NOT focus on her appearance. Talk about her willingness to lie...about everything.
Is the new press secretary out of her depth? 1000% yes. But the bigger violation comes from her authoritarian sycophancy and willingness to lie about easily refutable empirical claims. And remember: mocking her for being a pretty girl who can’t read is exactly what MAGA wants the left to do.

There is nothing legitimate about this “investigation.” It’s a racially motivated persecution of a political opponent and nothing more.
When Dems talk about the Ilhan Omar situation, they need to stop using language that implies that Omar might have done anything wrong. Trump is not "investigating" Omar. They are trying to denaturalize and deport a sitting Congressmember by scrutinizing decades old paperwork from when she was a kid
Everything about this looks sketchy. Especially given Trump’s recent comments about Somali-Americans.
I do not think an exec branch led by a man who thinks he is entitled to treat federal agents as an arm of his firm, refers to Somali Americans as “garbage” and has said racist things specifically about Omar is capable of neutrally applying the law to her, to put it mildly apnews.com/article/ilha...
Picking off NC09 would be wild. It's the district that was designed to engulf all the exurbs around Greensboro and rural areas like Alamance and Hoke Counties.
Yeah, this is a pretty aggressive list. The incumbents in that first list of top races won last time by 20, 19, 17, 25, 17 and 17 points. (The SC district is Nancy Mace's and the NY one is Elise Stefanik.) If these are the front lines, the GOP is basically dug in outside Berlin
What’s amazing to me is this guy thinks this is something to brag about. I’d never in a million years trade away one monitor story time. It was always a wonderful part of my day.
It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.
We’re going back to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study.
It’s hard to believe that CDC Director Dr. Erica Schwartz hasn’t had extensive training in research ethics. That means she’s intentionally going to let babies in Guinea-Bissau be infected with Hepatitis B by withholding vaccine when they have vaccine available.
Rubio: “there is nothing selfish … about fighting for your own interests.”
US Secretary of State Rubio calls for a new era of Western imperialism in order to dominate the rest of the world. Among his heroes is Alexander the Great. Rubio clarifies that the US and the West, in the regime's view, are the enemy of the rest of the world. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/07/w...
And it's not just the cruelty of leaving a small child without their mother. It's the everyday fear that many people--including schoolchildren--carry every day as they wonder whether they'll come home to an empty house.
In Austin, a 9-year-old watched ICE detain and drive away with his mother, leaving community members to scramble to find him care. Senate Republicans just blocked a bill that would bar ICE from making arrests at school bus stops. Their cruelty is endless.
