impossible to read something like this and not think of the administration’s efforts to separate and destroy families

We stopped expanding the House in the 1920s, decided the Supreme Court should freeze in the 1930s, added the last states in the 1950s, amended the Constitution only once in the last fifty years. The USA and its government continued to grow, but almost all that growth came in the executive branch.

i really think the only reason we haven't created new states — which was a common political tactic in the 19th century, see nevada and the dakotas — is that 50 is a round number

$5M for dinner access to MAGA-T makes the "Dinner with Jay-Z or $500k?" meme look like small potatoes, pun intended smh

Like many NCO/USM folks in Naples I used to live in Castel Volturno; my stepdad was occasionally mistaken for a Nigerian immigrant there by locals. The 2008 mass shooting (which killed victims that had no ties to the Nigerian mob) turns my stomach & helps me realize the Pinetamare I knew is no more😢

A Nazi owns Twitter, right wing billionaires own the Wall Street Journal and the LA Times, and CBS is run by a right wing nepo baby who just fired one of the network’s biggest stars for criticizing Donald Trump. Here’s why America has a left-wing media bias problem.

Mike: Oh Lord, I am your most devout servant, why hast Thou forsaken us in this time of flooding in Texas? God: I guided your brethren to build the most sophisticated weather monitoring and notification system ever. What happened with that? Mike: Uh... God: Dipshit. Can I plz speak to an adult?

Perhaps Newsom should have spent less time chumming around with authoritarian buffoons on his podcast and more time preparing and strategizing for the entirely predicable thing that is happening in his state right now.

Governor Jay Inslee@govjayinslee.bsky.social

Washington just took the reasonable step of not allowing the National Guard of other states to operate here without our agreement. It’s not the Guard personnel we are concerned about, it’s other governors in the Trump cult. katu.com/news/local/g...

The first screening of Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ in Clarksdale, Mississippi. This is the first time a lot of people in Clarksdale have been abled to watch the film for the first time. Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Evans, and Miles Caton were all in attendance. 📸: @/Carmen_A_Jude (on X)

it's pretty wild how throughout all of history nobody who has ever decided to argue that "actually a little bigotry is okay" ends up looking like one of the good guys and yet people are still lining up left and right for the opportunity to do so in the paper of record

RIP Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o--I sat in for a couple of his classes when he was teaching at NYU and even those 2-3 classes were masterclasses in literary brilliance. Another genius one of one who we can never replace.

The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

The Kenyan writer and perennial Nobel runner-up Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o has died. In 2022, DW Gibson drove through Southern California with him—and discussed what living among strip malls meant for a writer whose work centers on particularity:

No other scholar has ever helped me understand quite to the degree he did how colonialism and colonization starts in the mind, and in the culture: before it ever gets to the point of stealing land, stealing histories, stealing resources--it first steals self-respect, language, traditions and culture

His intellectual debates with another one of my favorites, Wole Soyinka, over publishing, interpreting and teaching (East and West) African literature were legendary. And Ngugi was right--you have to Do for Self on every level, even literary, to really begin to chase freedom and self-empowerment.

MIC DROP MOMENT: Rick Scott got violated in a Starbucks when a woman told him: “You’re an embarrassment to our State.” She dragged him for ripping away healthcare and bending the knee to authoritarianism. He froze. Republicans should NEVER feel comfortable in public.
