I'm starting to see more and more 'representation isn't trendy anymore so we shouldn't include it' kind of arguments, and that both manages to miss the point of why people advocate for representation in the first place, as well as reveal a profoundly narrow and cynical worldview

please stop replying to game devs saying things like "well look on the bright side those laid off devs can start their own indie studios now" because eventually one of us is going to snap and "WITH WHAT FUCKING MONEY" would be a shitty last thing to hear before you die

I had an incredible high school teacher whose words feel so relevant today. Paraphrasing (cuz it was years and years ago) If you want a strong indicator of the health of a society, look at how that society values its artists.

We had a game jam at work and I made my first Unreal game. A shooter, at that! With me as the designer. Working in a new engine, new genre, and (kind of) new role was pretty overwhelming and the game turned out kind of underwhelming, from a design and playability standpoint (...)

So what I'm trying to say is, my own embarrassment about not already knowing something took away the possibility of joy in learning. I still learnt. But I could have approached the jam with fewer expectations on myself. And I guess I put off learning things I feel I should already know. How silly.

It's also interesting how the externally set goals of this jam (make interesting prototypes) got to even me! Bc in the end, I do believe that no matter how good the game you work on ends up being, no matter accolades or money made (beyond survival) your most important takeaway is the learning.

For instance, I knew now why the cursor might not show up in the main menu, because we had that problem. Why the correct level played in editor, but not in the build. Etc. At the time, I just felt frustrated and angry at myself that I didn't know these basic things. (...)

Discovery-based learning - try it, then fix it, only then study the "right" way to do it - is really effective for recollection. The effort put in while learning is what makes it stick. That overwhelm, insecurity and discomfort? That was from being outside my comfort zone, where learning happens.

... so after the jam I was feeling, well, dejected. What's the point, if I can't make something perfect on my first try? In two days, at that? Ugh, completely wasted effort... such a 'meh' result Well, we had UE skill assessment at work today. I got 50/60 multiple choice questions correct? How?!

This is also why when you ask someone what they think about your proto, part of what you're actually asking is 'do you think I have what it takes to make this good'.

One thing that still surprises me about game development? How iteration is so wildly effective at turning garbage into gold. "This sucks" -> Fix things that suck -> "Doesn't suck?! Whoa!"

I know that you, the Senior team member, feel the pressure to catch up, to stay on top of your workload. An evening here or there, a Saturday spent "noodling". First to arrive, last to leave. Meetings, reporting, reviews, last minute presentation materials. It's sea change. It's slow poison.

Tapping the sign Crunch is NOT always driven by management choices and bad planning Sometimes it is a culture, a culture created and reinforced by the people in development

Unfortunately, I don't think there are easy answers to this problem as long as business modus operandi is to extract as much profit as possible. But Perhaps trusting your team enough to ask them to let you know when your workload affects your behaviour as a start.

I don't know anyone who still believes in crunching your team. But it's hard to admit to yourself that you're contributing to crunch culture. That stress you're carrying is going to spill over and give someone on your team anxiety attacks. You're teaching your team that boundaries are a luxury.
