"Will no one rid me of these turbulent narcos?"
Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte is under trial for murder and attempted murder. His defense is that while he admits having formed a "death squad" that killed people on Duterte's "narcolist" he didn't DIRECTLY order them to kill, only to "neutralize". www.icc-cpi.int/news/situati...
This seems highly relevant to my interests, especially as Lithuanian beers look to feature malt over hops
@larsga.bsky.social wrote an English guide to Lithuanian beers that I read before a trip that got cancelled a few years ago. I'm hoping to make it happen eventually. It wasn't a beer trip but it was worth learning about the food/drink before I went. www.garshol.priv.no/download/lit...

Those early Hawkwind albums are a trip bc everyone is playing dosed-to-the-gills psychonaut space rock except for Lemmy who for all intents and purposes is already in Motörhead. The net result sounds like voyaging to Alpha Centauri on a Harley. It’s basically what Lobo hears in his head all day.

On this day in Horror History, CARNIVAL OF SOULS was released in 1962.

Back in the aughts Raymond returned to rec.arts.sf.written after being away for a few years. After first pushing Bell Curve style "race realism," he tried to defend himself with "I can't be a racist - I've slept with all kinds of beautiful exotic women!"
oh also eric s raymond is a rationalist, but not a bay area rationalist, and demonstrates the sometime movement ideological problem of "being a weird nazi"

It reminds me of claims about nanotechnology a couple of decades back, where people would ascribe basically magic powers to the bots ("They'll disassemble and rebuild anything they come across!"), without explaining how it would be physically possible, or even where they'd get their power from
One assumption that always particularly bugs me is basically the idea that the AI will have the unfettered ability to manipulate the material world that it doesn't really exist in.
