200B is a big number, 50B away from the province's debt. Montreal's STM has a 7B deficit.

Alto is now targeted by people in Toronto + English Canada, who see it as too Québécois (HQ in #Montréal , francophone executives), and the Parti Québécois, who see it as a non-Québécois conspiracy imposed by Ottawa and English Canada. It’s neither. It’s just a smart idea, one whose time has come.

The resulting assets were also useful and had more than a 3-5 year useful life. We won't need that many data centres, nor that many chips.

Yes, railroads were built in three big investment waves Yes, it is totally possible that the same will happen with AI But every single time investors were cleaned out (PS: and a 3x investment - from 2 to 6 in the chart - in 50 years is like 2.2% CAGR...)

The Greenland Ice Sheet shrinks for the 30ᵗʰ year in a row. The last year with an ice gain was 1995/96. Greenland and Antarctica together lost 11309 Gt of ice between 1979 and 2023. This has raised the global sea level by around 32mm. See the complete report at www.carbonbrief.org/guest-post-g....

Well, who'd have thought? "the [world's] richest 0.1%...... are heavily invested in disaster preparedness, recovery and reconstruction – a market that is projected to grow from $70bn to $92bn a year by 2029" Another win - win for the parasitic super-rich www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Why did GHG emissions rise in 2025? The biggest increase was in the USA, followed by international transportation. India, Russia, & the European Union all had slight declines. Chinese GHG emissions rose, still not peaked.

Don't forget to tell students to not use AI as that sloppy shit is for overpaid consultants.

"The Western Australian government has said it is “extremely disappointed” and is seeking an “expedited” cost recovery from Deloitte after errors were discovered in a report about a potential university merger, including AI-hallucinated references…."

i thought adjuncts were created for that kind of thing (and not second class professors)

Neither of the people in this photograph are qualified for an academic job (see also "Professor" Bill Shorten). I like Ardern a lot, and creating a role using her experience for mentoring is great, but hospitals don't say "we've hired Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman to do heart surgeries this month."

...or maybe we shouldn't rush to build data centers

Zeke Hausfather@zekehausfather.com

In the rush to build data centers, companies are starting to use their own off grid gas generators. This results in much higher emissions – 60% to 80% – compared with using their local electricity grid and risks locking in longer-term fossil dependence. www.theclimatebrink....

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Lonnie Rouse worked at the Hanford nuclear site for nearly 20 years. It was so toxic, he said, that the floor once melted the rubber off his boots. Now he needs 24-hour care. The DOE has appealed his workers’ compensation claim more than 20 times.

People who think embracing GOP hatred of trans people is the only way for Democrats to win in that part of the country should remember that in 2025, John Ewing became the first Black mayor of Omaha NE by running this ad. He beat Republican incumbent Jean Stothert by 12 points.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.

Among the many things climate change deniers don’t understand is significance. They spend years looking for errors in climate data but don’t understand that what they find is almost always insignificant. It’s also why they’ll never be satisfied by any rigorous report on climate data.

Graham Readfearn@readfearn.bsky.social

The Australian newspaper has been claiming a "forensic audit report" shows BoM's temperature data has "widespread error". For 15 years climate sceptics have been claiming a conspiracy around the data. Is anything different this time?
