I don’t care if the man had a gun. By all accounts he was disarmed & on the ground when he was shot 5 times. You don’t get to shoot people unarmed on the ground point blank 5 times. I know this sounds crazy under fascism but standards for law enforcement should be higher not lower than civilians!

ICE camping outside immigration courts to arrest people is one way to get around court proceedings & expedite removals. And it's a double-edged sword -- if this scares people away from court they'll be up for automatic removal anyway, @mattcameron.bsky.social said theintercept.com/2025/05/21/i...

Higher education should absolutely *not* act this way in light of the graduate student arrests we’ve seen at Tufts, Alabama, Minnesota, Columbia, and a growing number of schools. And yet here we are. Faculty and admin must work together to value and protect our students.

In 1993, the Supreme Court said that immigration court proceedings are “domestic procedures ” which are not relevant outside the United States, specifically as relates to people detained at Guantánamo Bay. So I just can’t see how it would be legal to use Gitmo for “domestic” ICE detention purposes.

Went back and reread Sales v Haitian Centers and it sure seems like this is flatly illegal. In ruling that Haitians detained at Guantanamo did NOT have access to asylum through immigration court, they emphasized that the INA does not apply extraterritorially, specially at Guantanamo.

It's a real honor that @prismreports.bsky.social was able to publish this piece today by the brilliant Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, who argues that "election postmortems that do not address xenophobia do not get to the heart of the 2024 election." Please read and share widely.

In sad news, TRAC, the immigration court data portal which has been a vital resource for years, appears to be completely down following its departure from Syracuse University. It's unclear when (or if) it will come back.

If HB 666 passes, noncompliant municipalities would risk losing funding – despite a wealth of research proving that when local authorities engage with federal immigration enforcement, it negatively impacts public health and erodes trust between immigrant communities and police.

legiscan.comOhio HB666 | 2023-2024 | 135th General AssemblySummary (2024-11-12) Enact the Protecting Ohio Communities Act [Referred to committee: State and Local Government]

Finally, HB 671 ("Enact the America First Act") ignores federal immigration laws and the plenary power of U.S. Congress. It aims to deter undocumented immigrants from entering or being present in OH, and somehow it requires them to leave the state <72 hrs after completing their sentence.

The definition of "foreign adversaries" can change based on 15 CFR 791.4, and currently includes Chinese, Iranian, North Korean, and Russian citizens. SB 226 does not define "other persons," so there's speculation that political opponents can also be targeted. legiscan.com/OH/bill/SB22...

legiscan.comOhio SB226 | 2023-2024 | 135th General AssemblySummary (2024-11-12) Enact the Ohio Property Protection Act [Referred to committee: Economic and Workforce Development]

HB 547 passed the committee earlier this week and is now on the House floor. In addition to restricting access to affordable housing, this raises legal challenges related to discrimination & privacy rights for immigrants, and extends the role of immigration enforcement to housing providers.

Next, the OH Senate already passed SB 226, and as of November the House version is still in committee. If enacted, OH will keep a registry of "foreign adversaries and other persons that...constitute a threat to the agricultural production, critical infrastructure, security, or military defense."

“Can the legal system protect the vibe of a creator?” is a question I didn’t originally have on my bingo card, but it’s definitely going into the syllabus for my upcoming Law, Tech, & Society seminar.
