Open-source these and just... use these. More predictable and transparent and ultimately, fair, than any committee would ever be. The presidents and chancellors would never do that, though, because opening the process reduces their power and influence. And that's a no-no.

And as has been very requested: this week's top teams by average ranking in the five active BCS-era computers. No humans involved here! (Other than the ones that generated the formulas to begin with):

This week’s simulated BCS rankings are here as Miami and Ohio State hold on to the top two spots, while the rest of the top 25 sees plenty of reshuffling compared to last week’s edition:

Windows 10 may be beyond updates now but last week my machine still force-installed 3 GB of Copilot during some sort of update. Absolutely [expletive] the Microsoft employees responsible for that. Every one of you.

ECMWF’s 9 km data is now free and open. The move will give more people access to accurate and localised forecasts. The resolution can make the difference, for example, between predicting rain in a large area and knowing which valley it will land in. Read more ➡️ www.ecmwf.int/en/about/med...

I think it was a couple summers ago that Doug Sirmons said "I don't referee college basketball now, I referee pro basketball." Wasn't joking. Sigh.

This is worse and harder to comprehend than any other 5-for-5 decision in college sports. A joke.

New week, new top tier of the simulated BCS. Miami, Ohio State and BYU break away while last week’s top two slide to Nos. 4 and 5 after a chaotic week:

I'll reiterate to anyone visiting Manchester - take the drive (or bus) out to Leigh and spend some time at the Northwest Computer Museum. So many nifty things to see and play with.

Anyway, today was awesome, but amid all the upsets, we’re all forgetting the most important thing about college football. What truly makes this American institution so unique and special. Growing shareholder value.

Did Gus actually start to say "is that a tackle for a los..." while the ball was being tipped and intercepted? How, how do y'all listen to this every week. At least Verne realized he was slow and got a spotter to help him.

When I was an undergrad, our physics prof made sure to show the dancing baby gif during her lecture (I think she had to leave powerpoint to fire up a web browser), so we all could get to see it. Imagine ~200 Harvard undergrads raptly watching a gif. Now you can, too! Thanks @archive.org

Record high October sea level pressures appear to have been set broadly over WY, CO, & the Central High Plains. I’ll compile a list tonight. The 3-5 hPa difference between obs & models didn’t occur. This likely means that standard atmos vertical profiles are similar to model soundings currently.

8:30: some of the storms have just scraped by to our north, but it looks like we're finally going to get our turn with the heavy rain. Only a couple small places that have any rotation in them -- wind & rain are the big things incoming.

7:45 update: storms incoming and personally, am loving that slow, low constant rumble of thunder. More seriously, a couple storms do have some rotation in them. So if a tornado warning pops up just do what you're supposed to do. (These would be hall-closet-for-15-minutes, not basement-or-💀 storms.)

Hey Bloomington, useful time to talk about our weather jargon. What does it mean for a storm to be "severe" or at "severe limits?" It means one or more of: 58 mph winds; 1 inch hail; or (obviously!) a tornado. That's it. Rain, lightning, flooding, those are *not* what we mean when we say "severe."

Actual line of thunderstorms, a couple of them severe, incoming. Close to 8 p.m. Most likely scenario: heavy rain & gusty winds when they move through. (Worst case scenario would be a very strong one at just the right time, producing 50-60 mph winds.)

Calls for expanding #SCOTUS are entirely (and increasingly) understandable. But as today's "One First" explains, there are at least four difficult questions that those who support expansion should have to answer—especially as compared to other possible reforms: www.stevevladeck.com/p/bonus-257-...
