Shapiroā€™s argument employs a logical fallacy. Basically itā€™s an appeal to authority argument, with history or ancestors being the authority. Even if all of human history marriageā€™s sole purpose has been to bare children, it is not marriageā€™s sole purpose. I contest that thatā€™s even true, marriageā€¦

historically has been a melding of two aristocratic families. It was more a business transaction to create a stronger alliance between parties involved. Children were important but they werenā€™t the sole purpose. Had it been there would have been more flexibility in who could marry whom.
