If anyone wants to see the historic lobby of the Buhl Building downtown, visit soon. Frank’s sandwich shop is leaving after this Friday and the rest of the office tenants will be out by the end of December if not sooner. It might be in the shadow of the Guardian but it’s just as pretty

All SMART services, including fixed routes, Flex, and paratransit, will be fare-free next Tuesday.

A reminder to Macomb County residents that you’ll see a local transit renewal question on your ballots. This millage funds all SMART service in the county including FAST Gratiot, Flex, and paratransit/ADA service. The renewal is for five years. More info: www.smartbus.org/About/News/2...

Open House Chicago said “pick three” for the photo contest - here’s a few from my camera roll that didn’t make the shortlist but I still think are fun 🌆

Open House Chicago sampler platter, based on how much pinballing this first-timer can reasonably accomplish from the west burbs via transit on a Sunday: - Aspire Center - Sears Garden / Nichols Tower - HW Library archives - North Marine Drive condos followed by dinner in Munster/Lansing 🚃

Metro Detroit has two new Halo Burger locations and now Grand Blanc is getting the first Sidecar Sliders in Genesee County. Which restaurant we gonna swap next

sometimes both

go lions, and welcome back regularly scheduled chores and errands time while the world outside sports bars is empty lol

It’s so good to see this HAWK signal up and running. Back when I lived up here in Rochester Hills I jumped this curb and ran across traffic all the time to get lunch during a trail ride. It is also not lost on me that this one small improvement took a *decade* of advocacy and city council meetings

That’s not an indictment on Rochester Hills. Their planning staff does want to see more active transpo infrastructure. It’s the “go fish for a grant and check back in ten years” process that, nationally, must change.

I can’t claim I didn’t see the writing on the wall but it makes this no less heartbreaking. As a nonprofit operation MoGo seemingly couldn’t recover from the lack of grant funding. I hope they come back. Honestly, the City of Detroit should step in and fund the system like the transit option it is.

Per today’s People Mover board meeting, the DDP made the decision to shut MoGo down temporarily until they can get the organization back on its feet. The People Mover/DTC had been discussing a potential acquisition of operations but seems this isn’t moving forward for now

Came home to a flier in my mailbox for *another* Indian spot that’s about to open up on west 9 Mile in the same stall where the last joint immediately failed. Never mind the fact it’s AI slop, how many times do Ferndale residents have to teach wannabe Star of India competitors this lesson

They are an institution and have gotten me through the worst of nights. The team there deserves better than a busted WooCommerce template and order receipts formatted as shipping invoices from the owner’s personal gmail, endearing as it is

I made Amtrak Select for the first time ever and I’m already a good chunk of the way to Select Plus, dang. Fall weather gets me outta the house 🍂

It’s called Hayden Hall and it’s one of many such food courts open to the public during weekdays in the Loop. It’s effectively new - opened in January 2020, shortly faltered for obvious reasons, then came back in 2024! World’s Fair inspired. I live for this old coffee and donut shop color palette

Second floor dining area of 333 Wabash drew an audible gasp out of me. It’s like… Think the old South Shore brown/red/green with a little circus whimsy added for flair, and it’s eye level with trains in the Loop as the cherry on top. Incredible

AND it’s on the same block as the entrance to Van Buren Street station which *lowers voice* is a better boarding experience than navigating the bowels of Millennium right now let’s be honest

“Putter around on transit between hidden third spaces” is my modus operandi whenever I visit a city for fun and Open House is exactly that in event form. Amazing way to spend a weekend, will definitely do it again next year

Views of, and views from, the double height 14th floor of the Sears, Roebuck & Co. Merchandise Building Tower, now philanthropically re-christened the Nichols Tower

Lansing (IL), you are a cute little village worth the arduous transit journey from Chicago (and appreciate the plane thing you’ve got goin’ on)

I hopped on the train from Chicago back home to Michigan. I break down why I’m focused on the idea that we should speed up trains between Chicago and Detroit, and Detroit to Toronto! In Michigan we love our cars and driving, but taking the train is a great way to travel, and we can make it better.

My friend is trapped in Canada currently bc he walked over there on the Gordie Howe Bridge and then they unexpectedly closed the pedestrian path early. I’ve heard of this happening but hoped it was rare 😬 This is what happens when u don’t treat walking like a real mode of transportation

At this point I might have to adopt the “record in summer/fall, post in winter” method for blog stuff. It’s been a wild six months in the mitten y’all, no time 🥲

Corey@coreyjrowe.bsky.social

I will have a video/blog post of my own online in, like… 7 to 10 business days once I have a couple weekends to turn this heap of footage into something with a narrative

Looked over the Lansing (IL) to Niles (MI) weekday transit step-by-step I wrote months ago thinking “why do I have myself getting to South Bend two hours before my connecting bus” then read the Lakeshore Corridor timetables to the airport again like “oh, right… it’s that bad”

I mean, I get it, needs of the many and I am the few trying to literally take the South Shore Line to Michigan (Not City) but still

wait wait hold up. chicago, you guys announced intent to create a bus lane downtown like a week and change ago and it’s… done? painted and in service? like, your DOT said “we’re doing this” and then just did the thing?? can you share this witchcraft with the rest of us

reader, he booked it

So Open House Chicago, the big behind-the-scenes architecture tour, is the weekend after next and has been on my wishlist for the longest time. At this point I’m like

It’s about that week of the year where all Midwesterners have to remind themselves the day doesn’t end when the sun sets

sitting in the grocery store parking lot with the radio on waiting for the half and half a dozen people get out of their cars at the same time 😅 michigan hivemind

I miss Jamaal. Hope he’s doing well out there, remember thinking how fun it was to have a fellow nerd on our team. Entirely possible we crossed paths in the RenCen back then lol
